I believe I recently read that it cost ...brace yourself... $120,000 per year to keep the Leaky Cauldron (www.the-leaky-cauldron.org) up and running. I suspect, using that as a model, that the cost of keeping the Harry Potter Lexicon is similar. At the bottom right hand side of the main Lexicon screen in a link that allows you to donate to the Lexicon either by purchasing your Harry Potter mechandise through them, or by making a direct donation. I believe MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron also have this option. If you are ordering your Harry Potter books from Amazon or are purchasing merchandise directly from Warner Brothers, it would be nice if you went to one of these Fan Sites and used the links found there. Just by linking from one of these fan site, the site will get a commission from anything you purchase. Just passing it along. I'm still intrigued by last week's S5 episode, Mercy (AKA Saw III - I liked the horror movie, Saw, and this episode does rip on it), and the irony, yesterday (4/22/2006), WB aired a rerun of S3's Legacy. So, I'll spew some thoughts on, IMO, Smallville's strongest season, S3, and one of S5's better episodes. I'll talk about S5's Mercy, so there will be spoilers on it. Legacy scene snippet transcribed by Kerrplop & Willow: [[ Lionel: Clark. (Clark stops.) How's your father? How's his, uh, recovery progressing? Clark: (Reluctant, monotone.) He's better. Lionel: I can only imagine how difficult it must be to see him so... so weak. Clark: Weak, strong, healthy. He's still my dad. And I love him. Lionel: Of course you do. A son's love for a father... there's nothing to compare it to. Lionel puts a hand on Clark's shoulder in an eerie display of friendliness. Clark looks down at the hand uneasily. Lionel seems on the verge of genuine emotion. Lionel: After all, you only get one. ]] In past episodes, it seemed Lionel Luthor tried to ingratiate himself to Clark Kent as a 'father figure', a confidant, which would be Lionel's way of manipulation. I find it interesting Lionel said, "A son's love for a father... there's nothing to compare it to." Most likely, this was ripped from a Hallmark card. Considering Lionel's relationship with his parents being murky and their deaths connected to Lionel and even Lionel's strained relationship with his children, especially Lex (Lucas is off in storage, somewhere), this is an especially odd comment. However, there's this scene from Truth, the episode following Legacy, transcribed by Kerplopp: [[ Chloe: Meaning that my family's future is just one chess move in the endless game of one-upmanship played by you and your dad. Lex: It's not a game, Chloe. You're the only one who can get me the truth. Chloe circles Lex until she is standing behind him. Chloe: Why do you keep doing this to yourself? Why can't you just walk away from your father? Lex: Because he won't give me the only thing I've ever wanted from him. Chloe: And that would be? Lex: (Turning to face her.) I want him to love me. ]] Interestingly, the next episode is Memoria where viewers glimpse Lionel's paternal side before Lex assumed responsibility of Julian's death to cover what his mother, Lillian, did. The truth about Julian's death is eventually revealed and Lionel says, "If I had only known," to Lex. It's possible Lionel may have treated his son with more compassion in the past, if he had known the truth, *but* old habits are hard to break and the 'game' between Lionel and Lex continues as evident by S5's Mercy. The Mercy elevator cage scene was especially fascinating as Lionel faces his 'failings' (e.g. business and family) in front of Martha Kent. In previous S5 episodes, TPTB have tried again to incorporate Lionel as a father figure for Clark (i.e. Lionel as Jor-El's 'vessel' and Lionel's interest in Martha, which goes *at least* back to S2). It's possible, once Lionel's curiosity about Clark was satiated and his immediate health concerns alleviated, I think Lionel was (probably still is) seeking a 'second chance' at a family since he messed up the first time--not forgetting, the added bonus of Clark's potential and Martha as a political connection. Lionel talking about his 'parenting' of Lex to Martha also built upon this idea as Martha even references 'second chances'. Lionel has seen the admiration and love Clark has for Jonathan Kent, a love a son has for his father, which touches upon Lionel saying, "A son's love for a father... there's nothing to compare it to," in Legacy. However, Lionel also said in Legacy, "After all, you only get one," in reference to fathers and there's a moment in Mercy where Lionel admits he can't replace Jonathan in Martha and Clark's lives. Nonetheless, I think it's a case of a Luthor not getting everything he wanted and, while not giving up what he currently has, looking at possible alternatives for expansion. It's ironic that, while Lionel supposedly wanted Lex to regain his 'humanity', Lionel is harming Lex by not giving his own *son* love and acceptance, which Lex has wanted/needed in his life. Lionel is *flaunting* admiration of the Kents (e.g. saying Clark is a son to be proud of), thus, hurting Lex. A good story is frequently built on learning about characters and their motivations/drives, eventually leading to the story's climax. Part of what made/makes Smallville interesting is seeing how each character's past affects who they become. For such a 'secondary character', it's remarkable the impact Lionel Luthor has on those around him. What I also give S5's Mercy credit for is delving back into what made S3 good and attempting... *some* consistency between episodes and seasons. Jor-El previously 'gifted' Jonathan Kent, the 'father figure' for Clark, with extra abilities; however, with those borrowed 'abilities' came Jonathan's shortened lifespan. I'm not certain if Lionel may or may not have a shortened lifespan but Lionel has been placed in this 'father' role for Clark whether by coincidence as the person who had the stone when it was activated (twice? same stone from Transference) or by 'fate' and the fact the Luthors were in the same field where Clark landed. What's also interesting is seeing fans explore the impact Lionel may have from an 'alternate universe' scenario such as Lionel raising Clark as a Luthor and how it affects Lex (there's also fics with Lex being raised by the Kents {g}). I'll touch on this is my next jibber involving, "[Pseudo-]incest is best", where Clark Luthor and Lex Luthor have some 'afternoon delight' for the CLex group. Kemper now: I think you got it almost right. The big tin can coffee are usually robusta beans which have more caffeine but are also more bitter than the arabica beans (the beans used at most finer coffee establishments and roasters). Most roasters have various types of roast from light to dark. It's like having a pinot or a cab. I like my wine more pinot and my coffee more dark (not burned). My favorite roaster is Stumptown. But, then, I choose to support local and encourage others to check out their area for local roasters or local anything. Screw Starbucks and Walmart. When I was young an older left-handed cousin showed me how easy it is for us to write backwards, since most of the world is backwards for us southpaws anyway. At the convent school I attended one of the worst detentions was from an English teacher who, if a student forgot to do homework or brought the wrong textbook to class, would make the student copy out the dictionary starting with the word "organise" (in case you're wondering, I had to do this about four times. I don't recommend it). Even worse was the detention handed out by a Jesuit teacher at my brothers' school; this man would make the whole class copy out a set number of pages from the phone book (this was in Montreal) and when the boys finally finished and handed the copied pages in this teacher would literally laugh in their faces as he ripped the pages up and threw them in the bin. Not quite a magic quill cutting into the skin but not far from it, either IMO. Message-ID: Maybe this post belongs on the movie list, but I don't know anybody over there and feel more at home here. Does anyone think that events in HBP will influence the characterizations (particularly of Snape) in the OoP film? HBP is in effect the first half of a two-volume book, and on a first reading or a superficial reading, Snape appears out-and-out evil, whereas with a closer reading, he's at the least ambiguous. I'm pretty sure that Steve Kloves sees Snape as DDM (he certainly appeared that way in the PoA and GoF films), but the screenwriter for OoP may have a different view. Does anyone besides me fear that events in HBP could distort or otherwise unduly influence the writing of the OoP movie? (I have a little more confidence in Alan Rickman, who refuses to talk about "Severus," as he calls Snape. I think possibly JKR has filled him in with regard to Snape's true loyalties. But that won't be the case with this new writer.) Obviously I'm a DDM!Snaper, or I wouldn't be worried about him. Julie: As you know, I'm a DDM!Snaper too, and I'm not really worried. I guess it's because I also have confidence that Alan Rickman holds the character close to his heart and will play him exactly the way he feels him (which, so far, has been fairly sympathetic). Since JKR did tell Rickman some things about the character, most likely something about Snape's true loyalties, I think JKR is very invested in the character being portrayed correctly. If the screenplay veers too far from what the character should be, I think she would insist on a change. I really do. Carol, who would also be worried about the HBP film, but IIRC it will come out a year or so after Book 7 Julie again: I wonder if WB has given any thought to filming HBP and #7 back-to-back? That would seem a fairly obvious solution to the fact that the actors are constantly getting older, and probably getting eager to move on to new projects (though I'm sure they all love doing HP). Tell us the whole story, please. :o) Carol responds extremely belatedly: Just found this ancient post looking for something else entirely, and I wondered myself what I meant. And then I realized that I meant *now*, in 2006, Voldemort is long gone (as of 1996(?), when Harry presumably defeated him), so Snape, assuming that he's alive and somewhere other than Azkaban, is probably happier now. (IOW, I was thinking of him in the present rather than immediately post-HBP. In fact, I was thinking of all the characters who are wished a happy birthday on JKR's site as being alive in the present, which doesn't bode well for Luna.) Yes, yes, Snape is a fictional character and all that, but I'd love for him to find redemption and something akin to happiness at last. Obviously, Lex's gland kicked in or he'd be very short and still resembling a teeny-bopper... or something I've seen on Discovery Channel. {g} However, the lack of hair would say something 'abnormal' [for humans] happened. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000343.htm Lex carries some similar symptoms to hypopituitarism (low blood pressure may *partly* account for Lex wearing long sleeves in summer and the 'pallour' some fics use) and radiation, head trauma, and an "uncommon immune system" are only a few causes. What intrigues me in fanfic, at times, is how Lex can be almost completely hairless, except for eyebrows, eyelashes and pubic hair? I'd find it more probable Lex would look like he has bad hair plugs/implants because of patchy growth--offhand, Henry Jones has a Clark/Lex fic, "Infinite Possibilities"(?), where Lex has a tuft of red hair on his head--and prefers to remove it all versus looking like a bad example for Men's Hair Club. Case of nothing or patchiness, but speaking of implants, that's one alternative fanfic writers bring to the table. I've seen fics where Lex's eyebrows and eyelashes are implanted and that makes sense for both functionality and 'normalcy' aesthetics, so why not pubic hair implants. I remember there was a debate over how anime and some visual mediums like Poser (computer software that makes 3D 'wax-like' figures) lacked body hair on male characters and gave off the impression of chan/underage sexual representation, especially problematic after some Australian laws. So, Lex missing this body hair might be interpreted as him not reaching manhood... Err, though, that hasn't stopped him from reaching for Clark's 'manhood'. ;-) And by inclusion of pubic hair, the writers are visually validating Lex has reached sexual maturity. Although, those of us who wax the ol' 'landing strip' down below know hair growth there probably could survive a nuclear holocaust with the sheer *stubbornness* of hair follicles. But going back to hypopituitarism, this ailment also has some sexual dysfunctions. Hehe, maybe I can make a probable argument for virgin!Lex, w00t! :-D It could be a possibility Lex needs to be hopped up on hormones to, well, 'get it up'. Under feelings of possible inadequacies (e.g. emasculate), it wouldn't be too far-fetched for the stereotyping of expensive cars and megalomaniac tendencies in Lex. I need some advise. Yesterday I found out a friend of mine, a woman I grew up next door to and was very close to, is in a mental hospital. When my parents moved 6 years ago, my mom asked me to not give her their new phone number or address because she was too depressing and my mom didn't want to have to listen to her problems. I never went to visit my old neighbor after that because I could not bear to tell her that her old neighbors, who she had considered friends for the past 20 years, didn't want to hear from her. A year after they moved, I moved to Mexico. I have been back in the US for 3 years now, and have driven over there a few times to see if I could see her around, but have never stopped to knock on the door. I felt bad because so much time had gone by. I will be moving again soon, so I made another trip over there yesterday, and knocked on the door. The neighbors from across the street, whom I never knew very well, told me about her. The woman told me she refuses to talk to anyone but her and that she has ripped up any cards she has gotten from people. (I wonder if that is what happened to my wedding announcement.) I was told she just cries almost all the time. I feel so sad. I knew a lot of bad things had happened and that she was not doing well, but I thought she would have gotten over them and moved on. This is a person who I talked to probably more than I talked to my mom. I spent hours at her house chatting with her, beginning when I was about 5 years old. I can't ask advise from anyone I know because I am afraid I will start crying. Part of me wants to start sending her letters weekly, hoping that sometime she will not rip it up and will at least know that I still care about her. But I don't know anything about someone who has had a breakdown like that. I would not want to do anything to make her worse. Do you have any suggestions? If you're really serious about some sort of 'reach out', then I'd recommend speaking with the neighbors who still interact with her and see if it's possible to arrange a small meeting since there's an aversion to the written word. If she's truly far gone, then she needs a psychiatrist. I believe there's the... Baker Act? for folks who are a danger to themselves... Um, I didn't consider your message rude, but correct me if I'm wrong, 'OT' in HPFGU-OTChatter references 'off-topic' chatter that doesn't belong on HPFGU? From the front page: "OTC is open to threads unrelated to Harry Potter; in addition, HP-related topics that do not contribute to our understanding/interpretation of canon belong here." As long as no copyrights or confidentiality (anything that can place this group in a legal problem) or personal attacks, then everything is fair game for posting. I believe even the ban on religious topics may have been released around the time of the new pope... as long as the conversation remained civil. Awhile back, someone asked for puppy names, so it's understandable for baby names. Ditto on past topics for folks who hoped for a second opinion or sympathetic ear. Then again, I'm just a regular member, so don't take my word on list rules. I've posted about miscellaneous topics since I had joined some time ago. It was created some years ago when what we now call the Main List became very busy and it made sense to move any non-canon topics, be they about HP or babies, puppies, or anything else (within legal and respectable limits) to a list especially for OT nattering. OTC has been somewhat quiet of late but if ever you're bored or want to skive off work ***vbeg*** have a look in the list archives to see what a huge array of topics were discussed. There is no "on topic" for OTC, it has always been anything and everything the list members wish to discuss so long as it's legally allowed and follows Yahoomort's terms of service. The list was spawned as an off shot to keep the main group (HPfGU) clear of off topic messages as our list members were growing by leaps and bounds at the time, and such messages created a lot of clutter to sort through. Now granted, I haven't been an elf for quite a few years now, but I have never recalled seeing a rescind in this rule (and if I missed it, I would have assumed a name change for the list, as OTC is misleading). While some HP things are discussed here, more often they are done on HPFGU or HPFGU-Movie (depending on the media involved), if in-depth discussion is your interest, those are your best bets. Fun fact: we used to have HPfGU-Food as well (and I just showed how long I've been a member). Saitaina Who didn't notice Dizzy Elf sent a reply and now I looks stupid. ---- Who stabs unconscious people? Unless, of course, you wanted the unconscious person dead. So, keeping this group off-topic since 2003, I bring pictures not related to Harry Potter. Recently, there was a CW--for those not aware, it's the combination of WB and UPN networks merging into one--shindig in New York where various stars of both networks did their PR. http://ladyjaida.livejournal.com/434580.html WTF is up with Chad Michael Murray's... uh, beard? Sophia Bush is very pretty. Tom Welling still looks like a male model... now with a beard. And Michael Rosenbaum is obviously making sure all his hair grows back after months of shaving for the role of Lex Luthor. http://suzvoy.livejournal.com/1675512.html Hm, within the past few days, RPS has popped up involving the cast of Smallville and Supernatural because they look unkempt (i.e. too busy shagging to shave&shower). {chuckle} Oh, I caught an episode of Veronica Mars; I believe it was the second season finale. Different and the blonde chica, Veronica, is *hot*. Still not certain on whether I like the series or not. Then again, it took me a few years to come around to liking Smallville. Same thing with Harry Potter taking years for something to just *click* and pique my interest. As others have said, this is Off-Topic Chatter, meaning that anything not containing cannon on HP is allowed here, (with in reason as Dizzy the list elf mentioned previously) since it doesn't belong on the main list. I'm sorry if my asking for baby name help some how offended you, but anyone who's had a child can tell you that finding a name is an extremely hard job! Perhaps in the future it would be wise for you to simply delete the topics that you have no interest in reading, and allow the list elves to decide if a certain topic is acceptable or not then you won't have to be annoyed with those of us who are posting frivolous topics. And please don't take that as any type of insult or anything, I have in the past done that same thing on the main list when I find a particular thread silly, or something I'm simply uninterested in. Why let yourself be annoyed? Or if it's just the OT threads that are bothering you, maybe it would be better if you just avoided this section of the site, since it's very likely that you'll see more and more "non-related topics" as time goes on. The name we finally a greed on for a boy is Johnathan Mitchell. The middle name is in honor of my grandfather who I was VERY close too, and passed away late last July. There have been quite a bit of John's in my family, but never a Johnathan, and to find a name that has been previously unused in a family the size of mine and my husbands, that's an accomplishment in and of it's self! I've always thought Layla was a cute name, but hubby was never big on it, so it got knocked off our original list almost immediately. Thanks for your vote, I appreciate it! RE: Staples $9.50 desk Message-ID: <1a2738400605231954o3bf2ad37o632b52d413b652f3@mail.gmail.com> Staples had their Z-Line Designs Monterey Computer Desk on clearance *in store*. If you visit the website (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=100712&cmArea=itemavailerr ), the price is ~$140 for the computer desk and ~$80 for the matching file cart. In store, the clearance prices show $59.50 for the desk and $20.50 for the cart. But the kicker being... the desk was actually $9.50--one person posted this and it spiraled from there. It's recommended not to call the store because employees will swoop up the deals. When I called the corp # for availability, the national CSR was reluctant to say the price until I said it. She couldn't believe the pricing. There were a few left in Clearwater, FL. However, I got one and the file cabinet, plus, I used two $3 ink coupons, thus, making the desk $6.50 and the cart $17.50. Then when the employees found out the pricing on mine, I could hear them make dibs on the remaining desks, so *all* the desks are gone now in Clearwater. I'm hearing reports of folks buying 2-4 or more desks and more cities are out-of-stock. As to what I'll do with the furniture, give them to family members. Hey, they'll think I spent $$$ on some rather nice (and *heavy*) pieces, when I actually spent less than $26, including tax. :-D Dina From s_ings at yahoo.com Thu May 25 22:51:35 2006 From: s_ings at yahoo.com (Sheryll Townsend) Date: Thu, 25 May 2006 22:51:35 -0000 Subject: Happy Birthday, Charis Julia! Cellphone towers here in Miami all stayed working through the 120 mph gusts of Wilma last October. Unlike trees, the towers are all sproingy, and bend with the wind and there's so much redundancy of coverage that while we had some busy circuit situations, we were able to stay in pretty good contact through the storm, even despite the power failures to 90% of the area (the cell towers have battery backups to last 72 hours and by that point the companies managed to get new batteries into place). I thought about that but the price per minute was a bit pricey--hm, in between an Irish stepmom with many siblings and a mom raised on a small Japanese farm, it's no wonder I calculate value versus want at even a snack vending machine. So, I then did additional number crunching with her and she dropped the 'long distance/out of area' on her landline and other extraneous options to take her phone bill to basic. In the end, she'd be paying less now and still have long distance access to her sister and friends, along with an emergency back-up. I swear, she must've allowed a sales person to shack her up with a phone plan where she didn't use 80% of the features. Me, on the other hand... Friday, an insurance salesman stopped by the office, and even though I said 'no, thank you', he still snagged a business card. My first thought 'please give the card back and leave'... but I didn't say it. I'd be ticked if the guy used the mailing address, phone number, and email address to send junk I have to trash. My boss' father left for Greece on Friday--rescheduled because he had a family member who flies commercial jets--and then my boss leaves for Greece next weekend for a couple months. So, they're both forwarding their mail to the office for me to sort through and trash junk mail. :-\ ...Meh, I'm slightly depressed. They had me cash $10,000 at the bank last week. For a few moments, man, it was sweet having that much cash! :-D Then I had to hand it over when I returned and it reminded me my income is not a two person income. As Heidi mentioned, cellphone access remains up longer than landlines. Newer construction and technology versus the wires needed to connect each home. One other thing about telephones and hurricanes. It is usually the POWER rather than the telephone service that is actually out. If you have a phone that has a power cord (for portable handset / caller id display, etc) then if the power goes out, the phone is out. They are hard to find now, but if you can get a basic phone, with no power cord, that only plugs into the telephone outlet, then odds are, that phone will work through a hurricane. I have one phone that is 20 years old, but it gets plugged in before every hurricane, and I have never lost phone service. It is sometimes overloaded (circuits busy), but the phone works. Yep, we've kept a couple of those old 'rotary' phones--as a kid, I remember playing with the spinning dial and I kept mine, complete with school stickers. ;-) However, the city likes to pile cable TV, power, and phone lines on one pole for several residences, which can sometimes be problematic, and then rig the grids together. For example, a cable TV 'repairman' knocked out the phone line earlier this year but power remained. Other than the dead line, the most obvious giveaway was my line sagging about 4-5ft lower than where it should be. {g} Love thy neighbor... bah! I called out the phone repairman to fix what their cable repairman did. I'm not a native english speaker and one thing has always had me confused, what does 'dirty-blond', Luna's hair color, means exactly? Is it darker or lighter than regular blond? Is there a the difference between 'dirty-blond' and 'straw-blond'? Also, additional question, I always understood 'straggly hair' as a kind straight hair with some curls, only messed up, but I keep seeing fanart depicting her with straight and very smooth hair. Am I again misunderstanding the term? Message-ID: Hello there all. I belong to a lot of groups and have spread this message there but this little addition fits with all those that adore the Harry Potter books. You can have your very own "Philosopher's Stone" !! Find a stone - polished, big, small, it doesn't matter. Keep it in your pocket or somewhere on you where you will have the opportunity to touch it at least once per day. Every time you touch it, think of something you're thankful for. It can be big, small or even silly. You don't have to say it out loud - just think it. As this becomes habit - you will notice that when you think this way - your mood will change and your energy level will raise. As a result, your world will start to change and you will begin to attract everything you've ever wanted. Together, we CAN raise the frequency of this planet and HEAL the Earth. Shortly after coming up with the personal "Philosopher's Stone" idea - I found a polished stone lying on my living room carpet. It is now in my pocket. Please - PAY IT FORWARD! (If you want to know about more ideas to change your world visit me at http://echoesofwhy.typepad.com. There's a post to a video that will change your life.) Thanks and Peace. Dirty-blond, sometimes also referred to as 'Dish Water Blond' tends to be darker, more like a light brown but with golden highlights that clearly make it blond. So, basically, it is just dark blond. > xuxunette: > Is there a the difference between 'dirty-blond' and 'straw-blond'? > bboyminn: Straw-blond I suspect has a very golden yellow color that is similar to straw. Although, I'm not sure if it refers to Wheat Straw which tends to be very golden leaning toward red, or Oat Straw which is more of a bright yellow. But either way it refers to 'straw' colored hair. Strawberry Blond is any shade of blond that has a slight hints of red in it. > xuxunette: > Also, additional question, I always understood 'straggly hair' as a > kind straight hair with some curls, only messed up, but I keep > seeing fanart depicting her with straight and very smooth hair. Am I > again misunderstanding the term? > > Sorry to bother you with those capillary introspective, but hair are > important! ;) > bboyminn: Yes, 'Straggly' would generally refer to straight or somewhat straight hair, but refers more to the 'messed up' aspect of it. Generally, 'Straggly' hair would refer to hair that is somewhat stringy the way straight hair gets when it has not been washed for a while. Though it does not necessarily refer to dirty hair, just to hair that /looks/ dirty, uncombed, and somewhat stringy. Also, 'straggly' assumes somewhat long hair. Hope that helps.
