While I agree that Regulus is a very likely candidate there is one
thing that rouses my suspicion, and that's the fact that the potion is
still in place. I mean, the person who took the horcrux, no matter who
it is would have had to drink that foul potion, right? And then the
potion would be gone, right? (Unless, of course, the basin is
self-refilling, but, why should it be?)
I read a theory somewhere that the note Harry found in the fake locket
is in fact the horcrux, only it's been transformed. If this is the
case, then it was written by Voldemort himself to try to fool a would
be horcrux-hunter.
