>Although we are all aware of the religious criticism the HP books
have received from folks who perceive them as promoting the occult
and moral relativism, I am aware that the books have *also* been
criticized by people who feel that they are guilty things like
marginalizing women, denigrating social activism, bowdlerizing
teenage sexuality and a number of other sins that are hardly typical
concerns of the people who advance the *other* sort of religious
critique mentioned above. In fact, this latter sort of criticism
seems to come from the opposite ("left"?) side of our cultural value
spectrum.

>Have you all seen much of this "leftist" criticism? Any particular
names or links? - I'm having trouble finding much material. How do
you think it compares to the other kind of criticism? There
certainly doesn't seem to be as much of this kind - or is that
simply because the kind of people who advance these kinds of
critiques don't usually go bananas about it and hence don't get much
press?

  Baaramewe Mike,

For HP4GU, seach for the subject line 'Gender in the WW' and a thread will pop up by Krista spurred by Ceriden, the start date is 11/28/05.

I couldn't easily find threads with regard to Social Activism specifically (though I would think a thread/essay around Hermione/SPEW, House Elves may seem to address those concerns, one of the recent ones is 'House Elf Loyalty' started off by Steve.)

Nor could I easily find teen sexuality. However, there are few threads addressing love potions and rape, though I think there more to do with adult characters rather than teen.
On a side note, I prefer not to call these issues 'left'. 'Progressive' seems more appropriate though if there's an adjective for 'Human Concerns' it would be more accurate.
