Thanks, Melissa > Secca replies: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you can only take the WOMBAT during the times that the door to the Room of Requirement (the door with the 'Do Not Disturb' sign) is open on Jo's website... But there is good news... she has promised the third and final WOMBAT in about three months. Also, if you head over to www.potterskeys.com, and look at the 'Room of Requirement' you can find our WOMBAT transcripts there under the Fifth and Sixth door openings. These are simple copies of the questions from the two tests. There is also a full explanation of how the door puzzles worked. Unfortunately, we have no way for you to submit your test to be graded, as Jo is the only one who knows how this was done... Now, these tests are not simple trivia tests, but are rather tricky and open for *much* debate. If you would like to see some discussion about these tests, then head over to www.hp-lexicon.org. They have the tests posted with some lively discussion about the questions... Also -- at Potters Keys, we are currently developing a 'Widget', if you know what those are. It will sit on your desktop and alert you to updates at Jo's site, in particular, when the door is open, you can download them there. http://widgets.yahoo.com has info about Widgets for your computer... I discovered it at 14, which was just perfect. I count myself a *huge* LotR fan but the truth is I haven't reread it for at least ten years now. Also, LotR indeed has a very slow beginning, and I remember myself skipping lines and paragraphs for 100 or 200 pages before I really got hooked. Sherry: > > I too read LOTR for the first time when I was around 14. I read it every year or so, even now, over 30 years later. There are parts that drag too much for me still, but I'm so familiar with the story, I know what chapters to skip! But overall, I actually love the words, the way Tolkien creates a whole world and various peoples. There is a lot of humor, joy, sorrow and great adventure. hmmm, it's always hard to explain why I like a book, so ok, I just like it. Carol responds: What a surprise to find myself in perfect agreement with both Neri and Sherry! (Actually, Sherry and I agree on many things--just not Snape :-) ) I was fifteen when I first read LOTR, mostly because I had spent my own money on it to help out American Field Service, the club that sponsored foreign exchange students. (They were selling the trilogy plus "The Hobbit" as a fund-raising project.) I found the first few chapters very slow going (except the part about the ring and Gandalf, which I found intriguing but confusing), but once I got to "Fog on the Barrow Downs," which was downright scary, I knew this book was more than just a sequel to "The Hobbit." And the scene on Weathertop was both terrifying and moving. At that point I was hooked. I would talk about my reaction to Moria and subsequent events, but I don't want to spoil anything for those few who haven't read the books yet. The terror of some scenes and the searing beauty of others more than make up for the places where Tolkien is either too easy-going and Hobbitish for modern readers, who are always in a hurry to get to the action, or too pedantically formal when he's trying to present "high" matters, as in the Council of Elrond. (I do cringe when I read the descriptions of Glorfindel, Elrond, and Gandalf, but I know that he'll slip out of that style when he starts presenting the story from the Hobbits' point of view again.) I also really like some of the characters, including Frodo, Pippin, Boromir, Faramir, Eowyn, and Legolas, few of whom (especially Faramir) should be judged by their movie versions. (Well, okay; I liked Sean Bean as Boromir even though he should have been black-haired rather than blond. But Denethor is altogether ruined by the film, both in the casting and the writing, IMO.) And I love what Tolkien does with Lobelia Sackville-Baggins at the end. (Go, Lobelia! You must be related to Mrs. Figg.) I highly recommend giving LOTR another try if you've given up on it, Tonks! You may need to skim the part about the rustic hobbits in the Green Dragon (though I wouldn't--even that segment has its purpose) and grit your teeth when you get to Tom Bombadil, who fortunately only appears in about two chapters, but the payoff in chapters like "A Knife in the Dark," "The Bridge of Khazad-dum," "The Breaking of the Fellowhip," "The Pyre of Denethor," and "Mount Doom" is just astounding. I had to read the books through a second time immediately trying to recreate that experience and understand all the implications I missed the first time through (rather like Pippin, one of my favorite characters). Tolkien had a gift, perhaps a unique gift, for creating a world that both is and isn't ours in an imaginary time with imaginary beings that owe something to Norse mythology and Icelandic saga yet are completely his own--or were till they were so widely copied. Sure, the books have flaws, the overly detailed description being one and the stereotyping of certain "races" (species?) so that only a few characters representing those groups are individualized. (Once we get to Shagrat and Gorbag, tough, we find that even Orcs can have recognizable personalities. Too bad Orcishness triumphs over individuality.) There's no guarantee that you'll like the books if you read them through, but there's no way to find out if you don't attempt it. IMO > of course. Carol responds: That's an interesting perspective, Alla, and I think you may have hit on something important. JKR planned out her books, all seven of them, before she began writing and then plotted the individual books before she began her drafts, carefully putting in clues and red herrings and knowing in advance that she had to get certain important characters (say, Harry, Snape, and Draco) from point A to point B or C or G with a few key stops on the way. Parts could be rewritten, characters or subplots eliminated, two unplanned deaths and one unplanned reprieve added into the last book, but the main plot could not be greatly altered or the whole series would be derailed. Characters could (and indeed had to) change and develop along the way, but characterization could be trumped by plot if need be. (I don't think this has occurred in as many places as you seem to think, but I do agree that, for example, Dumbledore had to die and Snape had to kill him, and that could not be changed however the relationship between those two characters and the characters themselves evolved along the way.) Tolkien, in contrast, started with a handful of Hobbits (two of whom were merged along the way), a ring that had to get to Mordor, Sauron (a being from the Silmarillion), Gandalf, and not much else. The book had to be "rewritten backwards," as Tolkien put it, but there were also many false starts and many revisions along the way, including important characters like Strider/Aragorn, who appeared from nowhere. (Strider, as you may know, started out as a Hobbit called Trotter, and even retained that nickname long after he became a man, when Tolkien finally realized that his long-legged man would more appropriately be nicknamed Strider.) So I think, for Tolkien, character always came first, above all, the growth and suffering of Frodo, but also friendship, loyalty, courage, and similar character-related themes or motifs. And the plot was always episodic, structured around the hero's journey and consequently flexible, rather than being structured by the combination of a school year and a mystery to be solved in each book within the larger structure of the conflict between Harry and Voldemort interlaced with other conflicts, such as Harry/Snape and HRH/Draco, that continue, and perhaps escalate, within the framework of the books. I don't think that Tolkien's plot suffers at all from the emphasis on character. The episodic structure enables him to back off from the intense action for some comic (or tender or tense but not dangerous) moments so that we see the characters interacting (Frodo, Sam, and Gollum or Merry and Pippin or Gandalf and Denethor, to give just a few examples.) Also, the pov is very different, and whole sections shift away from Frodo and the Ring to focus on a different set of characters in the vast world of Middle Earth, which feels entirely real with its well-thought out geography and physical features, very different from the confined microcosm of Hogwarts, which despite talking portraits and moving staircases (seldom mentioned after the first two books) is really not very carefully delineated. If you try, as I did, to figure out how the kitchen can be reached from the doorway across from the great hall, which sits above the kitchen, you'll only give yourself a headache. Tolkien would have planned it out and made sure it made sense. JKR isn't even sure which floor Moaning Myrtle's bathroom is on. That's important to me in the way I > visualise him, he must *sweep*. > Carol: I agree that the costume is dreadful, mostly because Snape would never wear trousers (or tight sleeves with buttons). He'd wear wizard's robes, for crying out loud, and as you say, the cloak has to be longer so he can sweep out of the room. I don't mind the wig since I don't think fo snape as being as "greasy" as Harry and Sirius Black do, and I think Alan Rickman's nose (as Snape--I don't know whether they've altered it or not) is just right, as are his teeth--just crooked enough to be noticeable when he's angry but not when he's speaking normally. I like Rickman's range of (facial) expression and his mvoements, but the voice isn't quite right--a little too hissy and slobbery, if I may say so without annoying the diehard Rickman fans. His "Ex. . . pelliarmus!" in the CoS film takes much too long to say. Even Branaugh!Lockhart could have gotten in a Protego during the interval between the first and second syllables. And, yes, he's much too old, a problem that can only get worse as the films progress. I don't have a problem with his height and the build is okay, but the costume, especially from the duelling scene forward, is decidedly unSnapish. > Potioncat: > > Well, I don't care for any of the wizards' costumes (except for DD > in the first two) or any of the kids' costumes. The women professors > are alright. I thought, after Snape showed his dark mark in the > books, that there had been a plan all along for his sleeves to be so > long--- so to hide the mark. But they cut that scene anyway. Carol: I agree completely. The costumes are too modern and Mugglish. The trousers that Kreacher snogged aside, Wizards wear robes and cloaks! I don't like the electric trains and Victrolas, either (though we do have a Victrola mentioned in relation to Slughorn in HBP, oddly enough). Still, I don't like the idea that Hogwarts resembles the Muggle world of the 1940s. The whole atmosphere should, IMO, be much more medieval. You know--dungeons, suits of armor, candles. . . . That's not the twentieth century, not even the early or mid-twentieth century. In the case of the kids, they wear actual Muggle clothes from PoA onward. Would Draco wear Muggle clothes at all, ever, except maybe at King's Cross Station to pass as a Muggle getting onto and off Platform 9 3/4? The books say black robes for everyday wear--and that includes Saturdays. The Pensieve scene ("Snape's Worst Memory") won't work at all unless Sevvie is wearing wizard robes (and greying underwear). And part of the illusion JKR is creating depends on Wizards, at least the adults, having no clue what Muggles actually wear. How can that be the case if even the pureblood kids wear Muggle clothes under their robes and dispense with the robes altogether during their free time? (And look at Karkaroff's guards and Barty Jr. in the Pensieve scene in the GoF film, which didn't even give us Dementors guarding the prisoners, not to mention all the combining and eliminating it did elsewhere.) > Potioncat: > > Some time back, I was considering that canon!Snape would not be as > > yummy as Movie!Snape and was trying to picture a better image. > There was a movie on the TV with a charactr that seemd to "be" canon! Actually, thinking about it, Rupert Everett would > have made a *fabulous* Snape. Ooh yes, that's who I'd have cast. Carol: I looked them both up on the IMDb. I didn't like Tim Roth's looks and Rupert Everett was too square-jawed. Snape is supposed to be noticeably thin (but wiry, I think. That last scene in HBP shows him to be in marvelous physical condition.) So I'll stick with Rickman!Snape and pray that they can keep him looking middle-aged rather than borderline elderly in the upcoming films. He'd have the right look if only he were the right age. Again, it's only the costumes and occasionally his voice that bug me. Michael Gambon as Dumbledore and his horrible gray robes and rubber-banded beard--don't even get me started! As for other characters, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid comes close but his beard and hair should be blacker. The woman playing Madame Maxime was too much taller than Hargrid (computer graphics, I suppose) and should have been closer to his build in general--Junoesque on a grand scale, not tall and relatively thin. David Thewlis as Lupin? Not even close. I hate that stupid little mustache. And Gary Oldman as Sirius Black? Too old and no trace of lost handsomeness. (Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix will have the opposite problem--not old enough and still has her looks! I wonder if they can manage the heavy-lidded eyes?) Tom Felton as Draco is a teeny bit too old and his accent is wrong--not sufficiently aristocratic for a wealthy pureblood, IMO. (BTW, his hair is mentioned as blond way back in CoS, I believe. Or is that only the pale skin, grey eyes, and pointy chin?) Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort? His fingers should be long but not that long! he can barely hold a wand! I could go on and on, but I'll just say that Hagrid, McGonagall, and Snape are the only characters I can think of who resemble their movie versions in my mind. The Dursleys are completely wrong, with Petunia and Dudley having switched hair colors with Vernon. Potioncat: Does the text say "tall"? We once had a thread about Short!Snape-- was quite a while ago. The only thing about height I can find is that Sirius is taller than Severus when they get into their little tiff at 12GP. I think JKR has Snape as the stero-type: thin, not-so-tall out to prove himself male character. I get the messages in daily digest form and I'm waaaay behind reading. I save them all, and print them out a few at a time and read them at lunch, weekends, etc. I think I'm up to the first week of September, with maybe 160 or so more to go to get caught up - which of course, won't happen because every day there's another 2 or 3 digests. I rarely (i.e., never) post on the main list, but I especially find the different personalities amusing. There are the ones who are absolutely positively unmoveable objects as it relates to certain issues and others who work very hard never to have to admit they might be in the wrong about an issue. Sometimes, I'm reminded of President Clinton's "It depends what *is* is." And, then, of course, there are the ones who argue with everyone, just to argue. It's all worthwhile, though, when those very special posts make it through and really cause me to rethink something I thought I already understood. And....it gives me something to read HP-related to pass the time before HP7 is with us. In fact, I responded to an Elf and flat out said they were being too anally retentive about the whole thing; yes, I used those exact words. Now, after having been here a substantial time, I support these efforts. The Elves are tougher on new people because they are trying to get them in the habit of doing things right IN and FOR this Group. Once you get the hang of things and get off moderated status, things get easier, you are used to the format and it comes more natural. Also once off moderated status the Elves aren't quite so strict. You really have to mess up before one of them will send you a reminder. Even after years here, I still get them on occassion, though it is usually because I have been unintentionally rude or I have said something that really 'wound' someone up. A quick sincere apology, and things are back on track again. My point is to not let the initial frustration and sense of overbearing restiction get to you, the group is far friendlier and much easier than it would initially appear upon joining. Actually, I saw it twice, once at 2:30 and once at 4:30. I thought was a very good movie, though I admit it was hard for Rupert to shine along side Julie Walters. Still he gave a very good performance, and far outshined anything he has ever been allowed to do in Harry Potter. To some extent his character is introverted and repressed, so that somewhat inhibited his general performance, but he /did/ capture the character of Ben very accurately. When he was call on to be repressed inhibited, he did so very nicely, and when he was called on for more emotional moments, again, he was well up to the task. I've notice in both his HP role and his role of Ben in this movie, that his performances are very subtle; tiny things that he does that bring real life to his character. Anyway, I recommend it for anyone who wants a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon or evening. Living in small town Indiana as I do, there's no way I'll get to see this unless I truck up to Chicago... or wait 'til it's released on DVD. Bother. But I'm glad to hear you think Rupert did well. Steve: > I've notice in both his HP role and his role of Ben in > this movie, that his performances are very subtle; tiny > things that he does that bring real life to his > character. SSSusan: I totally agree that he does this. I think about the scene in GoF where Hermione is reading, with great disgust, the article claiming she's got a crush on the "Bulgarian Bon-Bon, Viktor Krum," and she reads about herself as being a "plain but ambitious girl," in the background Rupert does a sort of tiny chuckle & nod of the head that perfectly captures his amusement & agreement with the characterization. Granted, he can also be campy and a little over the top with his mugging (especially was do in the first two movies), but I think he's getting quite good at the more subtle details. If I remember right Robbie Benson played 'Harold'. I'm told the book was much racier than the movie. The was a very tender love story, and yes, it was funny. For the record, I drove 110 miles (220 round trip) to see the movie, though I justified it by claiming to have other business that also needed to be taken care of. I tried to talk my brother into going but he was commited to helping my sister with the local Church lutefisk supper/dinner. Could we possibly be any more small town Scandinavian? Steve/bboyminn PS: does everyone know what lutefisk is? We have had long deep discussion of it here before. I know it's scheduled to run at our independent movie theatre in December for about an 8 - 10 day run. If necessary, I'll book a day off work to make sure I get a chance to see it. After all, that's one of the joys of a flexible schedule, making sure I get my days off when they're useful. :) I'm also waiting for Alan Rickman's Snowcake movie to hit the independent theatre. Sadly, that one's coming when I'm away for Christmas. But I've still got my fingers crossed I can manage to see it. Sheryll __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kemper now: MJ is right, his young whiskers most likely don't require a Mach 3; however, his young upper-lip might appreciate it. A disposable razor, especially single blade, will cut/tear more easily skin especially young, soft skin. There are double blade disposable razors. But again, I'm not a fan. I prefer a twin blade razor with a very small head. I've tried several types and right now I'm set on the Schick ST Slim Twin disposable. It has a very small head that makes it especially nice for shaving around the mustache area. I've tried Electrics, mostly Norelco, which are fine if you like that kind of thing, but I always found that they irritated my skin far more than a blade razor. If fact after using an electric, it's like my skin is rubbed raw. For shaving cream, I prefer EDGE Active Care Gel - Ultra-Sensitive (fragrance free). I'm somewhat chemically sensitive so I need fragrance free, but any of the Edge Gels will work nicely. Admittedly, it's not a very fancy gift to give a kid a pack of disposable razors and some shaving gel. I have used a older version of the vibrating blade razor and I thought it worked very well, but the old version I had was very bulky. You might consider one of those. I have a friend who has a Wet_and_Dry Electic Shaver and he really likes it because it allows him to shave in the shower and to use shaving cream. I don't know the brand name though, sorry. But it might be a nice choice. The most common brands are Norelco and Remington (Also, Braun). I have not used Remington, so I can't speak to that, but Norelco makes some relatively inexpensive models. A quick check of the Wal-Mart website and I found a nice one for about $50. Wal-Mart's website also had a Panasonic Wet/Dry Electic Travel Razor for about $35. All Electric Razors- http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=133146 Norelco 7140XL $50 - http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5184603 Panasonic Wet/Dry Travel Shaver- http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5293208 Also, here is a link to a Norelco Factory Outlet website- http://norelco.factoryoutletstore.com/?&arefx=0 Side note: My Dad really like his Norelco Rotary Razors. It's all he ever used. Still...personally I have always been and will always be a 'blade' man. Just passing it along. I used only electric razors until I was about 28 or so (both rotary head models like Philips and foil-based razors like Braun or Panasonic), when the electric razor I used at the time simply failed - it just stopped. I needed a shave, but couldn't afford a new electric at the time, so got some Gilette start-kit out of the grocery store and gave it a try. The difference was very marked - after trying blades for the first time (having *never* before tried that way of shaving, or been taught about it/shown it) I was fully converted. I found that my skin was *much* less sore and irritated, and the shave was a lot smoother, than when using an electric razor. In fact, after shaving with a balde, it takes typically about 24-36 hours before I reach the state of stubble that I'd be in when freshly shaven with an electric razor. I generally find cuts are very infrequent. Based on the promotion I've seen of it, Gilette's new vibrating bladecartridges appears to be little or no more bulky than a regular Mach 3 cartridge. It seems some of the models in the vibrating series also have a single blade on one edge of the cartridge to use for shaving just under the nose and in other tricky spots, also. These are not sold in shops where I currently live, so I have no experience with them. Best regards Christian Stub? Neri: Actually I vaguely remember at least one similar prediction here in HPfGU, although I can't remember by whom, and I can't find the post. Does anyone know what it was? However, merely Voldy hiding his soul (or his heart or whatever) outside his body doesn't strike me as a great prediction in itself, since this is a common plot device in fairytale and myth. If somebody actually predicted that Voldy had several of those soul containers, and that the diary was one of them, now this would be a very serious contender. Personally I'm impressed by predictions done using the power of deduction, rather than some lucky shot. For example, before HBP we argued endlessly about how Snape convinced Voldemort to take him back as a double agent (I was completely off the track myself ? I thought only some magic could explain it). I think it was Steve (bboyminn) who deduced that the only way Voldy would take Snape back is if it was Voldy who sent Snape as a spy to Dumbledore in the first place. But my memory might be failing me and I can't locate the specific post. Steve, if you're reading this, do I remember correctly? If you are determined to get an electric, for a beginner, I don't think you can do better than either of those for that price. One last point on /blade/ razors; I don't like the swivel head razors, they just don't work for me. It seems that Dumbledore has been unable to tell Harry about his destiny up to now. I suggest that he is grooming him for a role that he will be able to take up only when Dumbledore is no longer there, that Dumbledore knows that he must pass his mantle as the greatest living wizard on to Harry. As Fawkes has to die before he can rise again, so Dumbledore has to die before Harry can assume his mantle and defeat Voldemort. Snape, then, has to regain Voldemort's trust and set in motion the train of events that will lead to the 'betrayal' of perhaps the one person who has ever shown him true friendship. Of course, I quickly shot that down as being totally illogical and unlikely ...surprise ...suprise. I've invited that person to come forward and toot their own horn several times, but I'm still not sure who it was. None the less, it was probably one of the most brilliantly insightful predictions ever made. > Neri: > > ...edited... > > ... before HBP we argued endlessly about how Snape > convinced Voldemort to take him back as a double agent > (I was completely off the track myself ? I think it was Steve > (bboyminn) who deduced that the only way Voldy would > take Snape back is if it was Voldy who sent Snape as a > spy to Dumbledore in the first place. > ... > > Neri > bboyminn: Yes, I argued that points several times, it was the only thing that really made sense. Snape as good as says that in the latest books. He said that he was where Voldemort had ordered him to be, which was Hogwarts. I also predicted that Ron would be Quidditch Keeper and that Harry would be Captain, though the rest of that prediction didn't quite work out. I though Harry would start out as Captain, but they would have conflicts about how to run the team, and eventually Harry would let Ron take over. Can't get them all right. As to my greatest anti-prediction, when we were predicting who would die in OotP, I came to the brilliant conclusion that it would be anyone EXCEPT Sirius Black. I contended that Harry needed Sirius too much to lose him at this stage of the game. ...surprise ...suprise. In making that prediction, I, in a sense, ignore what I had said only a week before. I made the comment that the person who would die would be the person who moves from the silent background into the forefront of the story, and that certainly fits Sirius. The very fact that I thought Harry needed Sirius too much should have been my first clue that he was MOST likely to die. Note that in the current books, it was Dumbledore that moved to the forefront of the story, and as a result died. Keep that in mind as you read the next/final book. The character that suddenly steps more promenently into the forefront of Harry's life is the person most likely to die. I predict, based on that theory, Neville, Luna, or (I really hope NOT) Ginny. Though, I'm not discounting Snape or Draco, and I'm keeping an eye on Remus, the last of the Marauders. Of course, given Harry's current position on Ginny, she might actually fade slightly from the bulk of the story, only arriving at the very end, and that might save her. I think it was Lyn Mangiameli (sp.) who predicted the soul outside the body? Don't know if he's still around. OK, here's my candidate for the best prediction I ever read (Cindysphinx): "So what is JKR to do with all *that*? Well, she has to *weaken* Dumbledore before she can credibly kill him, doesn't she? She has to show him becoming weary, worn down, weak. That way, when someone pushes Dumbledore off of a rickety catwalk into a river of lava, the reader will *believe it* and won't cry out, 'But wait! Dumbledore is too *powerful* for that to work!' "Yeah, Dumbledore is fading all right, but he won't fade straight to the grave. He's going to get a push from someone ? hopefully from a close and trusted friend." The Captain leans forward, her nose inches from George's trembling lips. "Bang!" she whispers. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/message/39610 ************************************************************* Now, I never predict *anything* with accuracy (pouts), so here's probably my one and only, in answer to someone's question about why Dumbledore told Harry the prophecy if he hadn't learned Occlumency: "I read this part to mean Dumbledore feels Harry is safe from Voldemort's intrusions now. Perhaps he supects LV will no longer try to invade Harry's mind again after discovering Harry is 'full of the force he detests'. DD did say that in the end 'it mattered not that you could not close your mind' which could very well spell the end of Occlumency. I was reading and LOLing for the last hour. Eloise's post is indeed an amazing prediction (and from two books away!) of a current *theory*. I must point out, however, that it's not canon *yet* that Dumbledore arranged for Snape to kill him in order for Snape to regain Voldemort's trust, even if the Snape fans very much want it to happen . If this proves true in Book 7 I'd have to say that Eloise's post is indeed the most amazing HP prediction I ever saw. In the meantime, what can it already claim? Dumbledore indeed died and Snape indeed was part of a "train of events" that led to it. >From two books away, pretty impressive. I checked this post by Peggy and this was the most prophetic part of it: > If that soul is lodged in a token, as I suspect, Harry's quest then > becomes one to find the location of Voldemort's soul-token and free > the trapped soul. Neri: It indeed looks rather amazing when you read it like that. But if you read the whole post, she writes that she predicts it mainly because it's a common plot device in myth, not because she deduced it from canon details, and she makes several other related predictions that proved wrong (or at least didn't prove right yet). > bboyminn: > > Yes, I argued that points several times, it was the only > thing that really made sense. Neri: It did, Steve, but not for the rest of us . I can't remember anyone else except you arguing this point at that time. Here, I found one of your posts about it: ******************************************************* http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPforGrownups/message/86384 bboy_mn: I firmly believe that Snape initially contacted Dumbledore back near the end of the first Voldemort war, and offered to provide Dumbledore with information. He did this with Voldemort's full knowledge. Voldemort send Snape to Dumbledore with some sufficiently credible information to gain Dumbledore's trust; thereby allowing Snape to appear to be working for Dumbledore against Voldemort. But from Voldemort's perspective Snape is actually a false spy and is actually spying against Dumbledore for Voldemort. ******************************************************* Now compare with Snape's canon words in Spinner's End: ******************************************************* "You ask where I was when the Dark Lord fell. I was where he had ordered me to be, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, because he wished me to spy upon Albus Dumbledore. You know, I presume, that it was on the Dark Lord's orders that I took up the post?" ******************************************************* This was a dead accurate prediction made by rational deduction, in the right context and for the right reasons, and there's nothing else in that post that proved incorrect. So, this is currently my personal nominee for the best prediction. Rickman's Snape seemed merely annoyed rather than the bitter, menacing character Snape is in the books. Dare I say Snape and Harry sounded almost like exasperated father and petulant son in the brief snippet? (And I'm not trying to make any predictions here ;-) Still, it was a very brief snippet, and it wasn't a line that I even recall being in the book (Harry: I am not weak! Snape: Then prove it!)? So I have some hope there will be a little more menace in Snape and actual acrimony visible between them during the rest of the scene, especially once Harry peers into the pensieve. Alas, Snape also looked really OLD in this scene (my apologies to Rickman, but he has reached his sixties now I believe). Oh, well, the books are the books and the movies are the movies. Still, I'll always love Rickman's voice! Julie, advising everyone that even without the OotP preview "Happy Feet" is well worth the ticket price--even if you're not going to the matinee showing! It's really a musical and the music is excellent, everything from funk to remixes of old rock classics to R&B...can't think of all the tunes at the moment, there were tons. The story is good, maybe a little long. The trailer was so fast! The 10 sec clip covered most of the speaking moments except for one of DD in front of the Wizengamot. Or do we just accept this as the hubris that is Harry's (hopefully non-fatal) flaw? Now me: I took this as Harry's warped perspective - he's just been traumatized - again - by losing someone very important to him, and he's hurting and feeling guilty. His first reaction it to protect those closest to him by pushing them away. First Ginny, then Ron and Hermione. Ron and Hermione talk back, and tell him he's being foolish. Ginny did not argue, but I had the feeling that she wasn't intending to let him get away with it, either. His logic was even more flawed with respect to distancing himself from her - IF Voldemort finds out they are close???? COME ON, Harry, get a brain... the entire school was talking about it (including Malfoy, I'm sure), and Snape was riding him about it indirectly during his detentions (or at least Harry thought that was the reason for his snide remarks about missing out on all the opportunities afforded by the good weather). For anyone old enough to remember Simon and Garfunkel - " I am a rock, I am an island, and a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries." (1) He did the same sort of thing in OotP when he was afraid that Voldemort was possessing him, and they finally put a stop to it when he didn't come to his senses on his own. I don't think he can actually carry through on this resolve, but it's going to take a little time to get over it. (and if you can't tell, I was annoyed with his pushing Ginny away.) Sue, in Columbus, waiting for the snow (hopefully, but not expectantly...) (1) Another bit of the lyrics from "I am a Rock": I've built walls, A fortress deep and mighty, That none may penetrate. I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain. Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
