I can identify with what you are both saying. When I was
new here, I took the same attitude. In fact, I responded
to an Elf and flat out said they were being too anally
retentive about the whole thing; yes, I used those
exact words.

Now, after having been here a substantial time, I support
these efforts. The Elves are tougher on new people
because they are trying to get them in the habit of 
doing things right IN and FOR this Group.

Once you get the hang of things and get off moderated
status, things get easier, you are used to the format
and it comes more natural. Also once off moderated status
the Elves aren't quite so strict. You really have to mess
up before one of them will send you a reminder. Even after
years here, I still get them on occassion, though it is
usually because I have been unintentionally rude or I 
have said something that really 'wound' someone up. A 
quick sincere apology, and things are back on track
again.

My point is to not let the initial frustration and sense
of overbearing restiction get to you, the group is far
friendlier and much easier than it would initially 
appear upon joining.
