Blunt is not the right word.

So, I'll put you down for: "No, I don't have a problem with it. I think
responsibility for one's children rests with the parent, *not*
ineffectual internet safeguards", then?

I agree, blunt is not the right word. However, I'd probably have to make up a glossary to describe what I felt were the correct words. Then again, I've always found it extremely helpful to be told how I'm supposed to parent my child without the person telling me having the benefit of knowing me, my child or our situation.

Did the sarcasm drip through okay? I do admire your restraint in your reply.

Please put me down in the category of shared responsibility. While I do believe, as a parent, I have responsibility for what my child (who is 7 btw) views on the internet, I also believe that the owners of the webpage or anyone who links to that page has a responsiblity to give me, as a parent, a heads up as to possible inappropriate content in a place most would consider would be child-friendly. Sites linked by the JKR website would fall under this category. There is space on the links page to give warning that there is graphic adult content on that site or, that it is geared to the adult fan rather than a general audience.

I have frequently sat with my daughter to view websites which may be of interest to her and to me and Harry Potter websites are on our list. Of course, it was much easier when she didn't read but now that she is more proficient I generally preview any sites I may wish to visit with her that isn't specifically geared to young children such as the children's BBC site. This site would have caught me off-guard as there is nothing on the home page which would give me an indication that graphic adult content could easily by found on the site. However there is a coloring contest which may give parents the thought that this is a "children's site." Obviously it is not.

As I do believe I have a say in when my daughter begins to learn about sexual kink, this site is now on her banned list of websites so we cannot access it from her partition, even by accident. I, however, may use the site to futher my sexual education as, at the age of 48, I was unaware of some of the words or acts about which I have now learned. I have lived my life quite happily up to now not knowing such terms or acts existed and could have remained living happily had I never known. I can always use it as a resource when my daughter does learn about such things on the street corner and comes to me to ask about them. Thank goodness there is such a place for me to go so I'll know what she is talking about. I am now more understanding of why my mother probably did not know what a hickey was when I asked her that when I was 15. Age and culture does make a difference.
