Hi Steve.  I read most of 'Magyk'.  It did not keep me spellbound.  I 
wanted to be charmed, to enjoy it, but it was too predictable.

I think you might like Nancy Farmer's 'The House of the Scorpion'.  I 
would label it as subtle scifi.  No space operas here.

I also like to suggest a fellow Oregonian, Timothy Zahn.  
Specifically, his Dragonback Adventure series.  Start with 'Dragon 
and Thief'.  It's a fun read.
