Because if you told a 13-year-old they were reading a children's
book, they'd be horrified. I don't know why they don't say Teen
books, but they don't. It *is* ironic since the group you
describe don't read Young Adult books. They read adult books.
Of course, saying Adult books sounds like porn . . . .
