Carol responds:
Here's a quick history of the map. It was confiscated by Filch (who of
course couldn't work it) while MWPP were at Hogwarts. It sat unused in
a file drawer until the Twins "filched" it in (IIRC) their first year.
No one else except possibly Lee Jordan knew about it until they gave
it to Harry in PoA. He showed it to Ron and Hermione (Hermione thought
he should turn it in to McGonagalle). When Harry returned from his
first Hogsmeade trip, having scared Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle by
showing up as a disembodied head, he was caught by Snape, who
confiscated the map and guessed that it showed a secret way into
Hogsmeade (he was already suspiciously examining the Hump-backed Witch
statue). When the map insulted Snape, he called in Lupin, probably
suspecting from the personal insults and the nickname Moony who the
makers had to be, a suspicion confirmed when Lupin says, "I'll take
this *back,* shall I?" (Back? You didn't catch that, Harry?) Lupin
keeps it, using it to check on HRH and instead spotting Peter
Pettigrew with Ron and Sirius Black heading down the tunnel toward the
Shrieking Shack. Snape sees the map lying open (Lupin forgot to say
"Mischief Managed") and follows him. The next morning Lupin, having
resigned as DADA teacher after transforming into a werewolf and
endangering three kids, returns the map to Harry along with his
Invisibility Cloak. In GoF, Snape nearly confiscates the map again,
but instead it's picked up by Fake!Moody. After Snape leaves,
Fake!Moody asks Harry if he can borrow the map, and Harry, thinking
that he's an Auror (with an eye on Snape) lends it to him. At the end
of GoF, Dumbledore finds out about the map for the first time ("What
map is this?") and apparently gives it back to Harry after finding it
in Fake!Moody's office (as JKR stated in an interview) but it happens
offpage. I'm having a mental block about OoP (someone help me,
please), but I don't think that anyone else finds out about it.
(Neither Draco nor Umbridge would know how to use it even if they
found it.) In HBP, of course, Harry mostly uses the map to try to
locate Draco, who keeps disappearing from it. No one new finds out
about it or confiscates it. And of course, Harry no longer needs to
use the secret passages now that he has permission to get into
Hogsmeade from GoF on, so the map is less important, and less likely
to be discovered, from that book onward.

At any rate, while *Snape* knows about both the Marauder's Map and the
Invisibility Cloak, Draco doesn't know about either one (despite
having seen Disembodied Harry in Hogsmeade) unless I'm forgetting
something from OoP.

Carol, who can't believe that a whole book has temporarily slipped out
of her head!
