Absolutely we are going to see more of Dumbledore, but
seeing more of him doesn't mean he will be alive, I
predict he is not going to jump from behind a curtain
and say 'Just kidding'.
Keep in mind that Harry's parents have been dead for
years, and they managed to make it back into the story,
yet being 'in the story' didn't make them alive.
The Gaunts have been dead for year, they returned to
life (figuratively) in the story.
Dumbledore has many means to make his apprearance -
- Dumbledore's Headmaster's portrait -
Certainly this will be one big source of interaction
with Dumbledore. I'm sure it will be a frustrating one
though since the portrait, while very realized, is not
Dumbledore himself. So, in some, perhaps most areas,
the Portrait will fall short, but that doesn't mean
it can't and won't be valuable and usefull.
I can't help wonder if a great wizard like Dumbledore
has other portraits in other locations in the Wizard
World?
- The Penseive -
We can meet Dumbledore again by exploring his own
memories left to Harry in Vials, or by exploring
other people's memories of Dumbledore, or both.
Others have argued that Dumbledore leaving a letter
or Penseive memories to Harry is too insecure, too
dangerous. I simply don't buy that. Dumbledore's
office is the safest place within the safest place in
the wizard world, and the memories could be anywhere.
With out specifically knowing where to look, it is
unlikely that a stranger would find them.
If McGonagall knows where they are, I suspect she
would certainly respect the headmaster's wishes and
keep them private from unauthorized people including
herself. Remember Dumbledore's portrait is right
there in the Head's office watching her.
- Simple Memories -
Memories as relayed in conversations and discussions
about Dumbledore. Moody has known Dumbledore for years.
Lupin has known Dumbledore for years and may have some
valuable recollections. Slughorn was a contemporary of
Dumbledore's for a long time, certainly he remembers
things.
- Other -
There must be some others that I am missing, but I just
woke up and haven't had my coffee yet.
Seeing Dumbledore again, doesn't mean seeing him alive.
I really don't buy any 'Dumbledore faked his death'
theories. I think the trouble JKR is having in getting
Dumbledore into the story is, if by portrait, then
trying to decide how knowledgable Portrait!Dumbledore
can be. He can't be too smart because that invalidates
her concept of portraits, but then he can't be to
dumb because that doesn't serve the story. So, I
think regardless of the form, she is struggling to
present Dumbledore in a way that is balanced.
Now Sirius is another matter, he 'died' under very
special and unique circumstance and I can fantasize
ways in which he could come back, but that is another
matter entirely.
