Carol responds:
Your last point (and I know exactly what you're talking about ;-) )
leads to another way that Harry can meet and talk to Dumbledore--a
trip beyond the Veil and back again. He could even get a confirmation
that Snape acted on DD's own wishes by killing him. (If Snape dies,
Harry might even encounter Still!Snarky!Snape beyond the Veil--that
might be fun!) I rather think that this scene, rather than Portrait!DD
or Pensieve!DD or a "simple memory" from Slughorn or Mad-Eye or
Aberforth (surely the best source for such memories?) is what was
giving JKR trouble. (I wish we knew when the conversation with Dan
Radcliff took place. Had she nearly completed the manuscript? If so,
she'd be referring to a wrap-up scene like those in the other books.)

Whether I'm right or wrong about the Veil excursion (the Hero's
journey into the Underworld followed by his return, changed and
enlightened), Portrait!DD is certain to reappear, having been nicely
foreshadowded by the peacefully sleeping portrait in HBP. We'll see
him awake in DH, and perhaps Confrontational!Harry will challenge him:
"How can you be so calm and cheerful when Snape murdered and betrayed
you?" I only hope that a portrait can talk about its own death and
reassure Harry that Snape isn't a traitor. ("Look in the cabinet,
Harry. And let your friends enter the memories with you.")

Carol, hoping that Portrait!Dumbledore will reveal the reason(s) why
Living!Dumbledore trusted Snape and lay the foundation for Harry to
forgive Snape his trespasses and work with him to defeat Voldemort in DH
