I'm sure it would have been.  I heard about it myself in Spring of 1999 
by word of mouth.  The only way I found HP on the internet was by 
deliberately searching for it, when I was desperate for any news during 
the long wait between GoF and OoP.  (I belonged to a long-defunct HP 
community in late 2001, and then found HPfGU in Sept. 2002.)

In fact, everyone whose history I know came to HP via the books or 
movies first, and then found the online community afterward.
