It has been difficult the last few years not to apply the Fforde
approach to Rowling.

Julie:

Not sure what you mean by this, but I too love the Thursday Next novels
too. Fforde is a fantastically creative author. He is also one of two

authors I can easily imagine writing about the Harry Potter universe
from their own original perspectives. (I am sure the Harry Potter series
will be as much as classic in its genre as the many classic novels Fforde
references in his stories, but of course JKR will retain the copyright
unlike with those older novels.) I can just see Thursday prowling through
the Hogwarts ferreting out an intruder who's altered the characters or
setting (Hogwarts Disneyfied with pure white turrets! Snape a suave ladies
man! Quidditch played with beach balls!).

The other author, BTW, is Gregory Maguire, who wrote Wicked and Confessions
of an Ugly Stepsister, reimagining two classics from the perspective of a
supposedly "evil" character, who turns out to be far more complicated and/or
misunderstood than actually evil (sound familiar?). I salivate at the idea of
Maguire retelling the Potter saga from the perspective of a certain snarky
ex-Potions/DADA professor!

Julie, also eager to read the newest Thursday Next novel.
