I think Ross was trying to 'catch' Dan, but he was doing
it in a friendly way. I think if he was truly antagonistic
he wouldn't get many guests.
In the first interview, Ross playfully asks Dan if he
knows any Adult Jokes. Now Dan could have gotten
flustered and stammered and stuttered trying to find a
way out of telling a joke on national TV, or he could
have stumbled his way through a Adult joke and came off
looking bad. Instead, he simply replied to Ross 'Do you?'.
Overal, I just think Dan handled himself like a pro. He
knew just how far to go into delicate topics, and does so
with calm confidence and no hint of teenage embarassment,
but he also seems to have a good grasp of exactly when
something would go too far and the sense to avoid it.
I'm sure there were parts of the interview that were
planned, though it seems relatively obvious that they
were going to talk about Equus and the new Harry Potter
movie. But beyond the initially setting and changing the
topic of discussion, I think it plays out more like a
fun conversation than an interview.
Of course that is the mark of a good chat show host, to
make caculated moves seem very natural and spontaneous.
Just a few thoughts.
