Magpie:
They do look like scones, but they're not like them--scones 
are...heavier? And it's a different flavor from a cake. 

You can get them in the UK if you're really interested, though I 
don't know how good they are. At Kentucky Fried Chicken they do 
sell "American biscuits" called that.
