Pippin:
I think a lot of people  use Dumbledore and JKR's world as a vehicle
for their own fantasies. Nothing so elaborate or distancing as a fan fiction, but
just working things out.  I can't read anyone's mind, but if DD was associated with 
sexual safety, then people might go through a period of mourning over losing
that association,  giving rise to  denial and anger, some of which we might be 
seeing now. 

It's hard to associate safety with an issue which has the potential to upset 
people so much, regardless of how  you perceive it yourself.
