Geoff:
Pay is a long 'a' surely.... In general UK pronunciation, the
'a' is shorter than that. As I wrote recently, 'Harry' rhymes
with 'carry' and 'marry'. It's much more easily detectable
audibly than the Sirius/serious difference.
