I just do it because everyone else does it. ;-) I always wondered why 
herb isn't pronouced with the h too. 

As to Herb.. there is also Herbie when Herb is a kid. Had a neighbor 
with that name once and his mother called him Herbie as an adult. 
Rather simple minded fella... old Herbie.
