Stephen Fry, bless him, speaks with what is usually called an 'Oxford' 
accent, i.e. a posh accent. ;-) You also need to remember that there is

  I think it is actually pronounced Sir-ee-us.  The reason I say that is because in the chapter "The other Minister" the prime minister discusses a "Serious" Black.  My thought is that because of the different spelling that he must mispronounce the name.  He heard "Serious" when it was in actuality "Sir--ee-us.  But I must admit being from the midwest when I see the name I still say "serious."
