I visited York for the first time last summer and heartily endorse everything that Geoff said.  I was awe-struck.  I'd never even thought about visiting York (chalk that up to American ignorance), but we took a tour that included it, and it is now at the very top of my list of places to return to.  I want days to spend there! 



York Minster is perhaps the loveliest building I have ever been in.  It took my breath away.  I could have spent an entire day there, and several more poking around in the Shambles, and hours more in the exhibits and displays at Jorvik, and that's not to mention that I only saw a tiny fraction of the city walls...
