I thought it was trademark, not copyright, that could become diluted. 
Copyright remains inviolable throughout its lifetime. Am I wrong?

I do know in 1965 ACE Books published an unauthorized paperback edition 
of the Lord of the Rings, but that *was* challenged, and ACE Books 
ceased publication. Can you provide an example of Tolkien not defending 
his copyright?  Thanks.
