The most consistent explanation that I have heard is that the
grandfather clock was merely a decorative shell to hold the
clockwork mechanism. Mrs. Weasley simple remover the 
mechanism from the shell, and carried it around. I still get
the sense that the mechanism she is carrying is relatively
bulky. 

There can be a simple explanation, if you are open to it.
