Yep, I think they just decided Rickman was too perfect to pass up, in 
spite of his "advanced years."  I mean, there's no question that he 
doesn't match up with canon!Snape's age.

But I suspect you & I are giving away more about ourselves, Potioncat, 
in our saying, "What? Old?  You think Alan Rickman is OLD?"  Why, the 
guy is a mere 62.  :)
