Help/Advice on Scholarship Letter

I'm a little confused as to what is appropriate to include in a scholarship application letter. They want us to answer the question "Why should you be considered for a scholarship? I am concerned with how to balance personal and academic information. I don't want it to read like resume, but when they discuss candidates I do want them to remember my 3.89 GPA and that I'm on the Dean's List. I am going to school to be an RN, so I was wondering if it would be too personal to talk about my son's medical problems, or if that could help them understand why I want to be a nurse and that I am committed to accomplishing that goal? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
