Geoff:
That's because "riding" in the Yorkshire sense has got nothing to do 
with sitting on a horse.
 
Ridings are historical administrative districts of Yorkshire. The word is 
derived from the Viking "threthingr" meaning a third part and, as you 
well may guess there are three Ridings, North, East and West.

There was never a South Riding but there is a novel called "South Riding" 
which enjoyed some success as a TV adaptation thirty years or so ago.

I don't think I've ever seen a black Yorkie. I always visualise them in the
colours you quote.
