That was the first thing that occurred to me once I finished The 
House of Gaunt chapter. Because apart from the name there was that 
locket on the golden chain. It is easy to imagine it fashioned in the 
SS links. Since the locket itself engraved with S it would be only 
fitting. And SS chains (or the collar of esses) had been the emblem 
of John of Gaunt and his followers and descendants and was later 
incorporated into the Tudor livery collar. It is sort of amusing, 
except that I don't see what it really matters, unless Dumbledore was 
himself of the house of York.
