Read the whole series, better yet, listen to Tim Curry read the books. 
The humor is very dry and there are sub-plots and on-going jokes that 
are very good.

I probably wouldn't have read it if I hadn't been reading it with my 
son. But at the end, I was glad we had persevered. I plan to read it 
again.
