Carol again:
I did consider them mindless (you probably did, too), but they were
words on a page and I could see them and immediately read them aloud
or silently and know what they meant, and that was magic. Of course,
it was even better when I discovered real books like the Bobbsey Twins
stories and could leave Dick, Jane, Spot, Puff, and little Sally to
run and play by themselves!
Carol, who remembers wondering in kindergarten what "tisofthee" meant
in "My country, tis of thee, sweet land of liberty" and wondering now
whether kindergartners are still taught patriotic songs with the word
"God" in them (probably not)
