Oh, is that what all the women were attending in "Calendar Girls"? So, 
you think JKR sort of assumed American ladies would have the same 
organization? Not trusting my memory, I made sure they were American--
they are, right down to their spangled banner. Although I've never 
heard of "spangled" without "star". I think you're right, though. The 
description sounds like a woman's club event. 

OK, but at least she knew Salem would have witches.
