I don't know much about computers either, but I believe there must be 
something like "power options" somewhere in XP, where you have an 
option of turning the hibernation function off. On my conputer (also 
XP) you need to go to the Control Panel, and then to Performance and 
Maintenance page. On my son's laptop power options are located directly 
in the control panel, but he has Vista. Anyway, open your control panel 
and start looking there for your power options, inside performance and 
maintenance or wherever :-).
