Apparently, 'catholic' means comprehensive or universal.

Yes, catholic (from Latin kata "according to" and holos "the whole") means universal, and has been used by the Catholic Church to describe itself since Ignatius in the second century as the universal church.
However, I think the reporter misspoke. She/he/it probably didn't mean to say either that Daniel's opinions were universal, or that he's expounded opinions on every possible subject. I guess a better word would have been "eclectic".
