"Rafe-his-real-name-is-Ralph-but-we-called-him-Rafe."'s nickname was Bubba.
OK, I made that up.
It was my aunt who alway's explained "Rafe's" name. I think she was trying to explain why Ralph was pronounced Rafe. I suspect she thought Rafe was a contrified way of saying Ralph and perhaps wanted to show she knew better.
She would also refer to old friends this way, "Mary Jones--she married the Smith boy--- or "Sally Brown---she married the Green boy---
I asked her once why she didn't just say Mary Smith or Sally Green and she looked at me as if that was the most ridiculous idea she'd ever heard.
And for all my joking about her ways, my aunt was a wonderful, loving individual.
