Changing of titles in translation

Geoff:

We have been discussing titles changing in translation. One 
interesting example where the translated title makes more 
sense resides on my bookshelf.

Some of you may know the name of John Wyndham who was 
a well-known English writer of science-fiction in the 1950s 
and whose books include "The Day of the Triffids" and "The 
Midwich Cuckoos".

One of his stories, which I consider one of the best SF books 
I have read because of the subtle and menacing way in which 
the alien threat develops is "The Kraken Wakes". The German 
translation, which does give away a little of the plot but is more 
understandable, is entitled "Kolonie im Meer" (Colony in the 
sea).
