I don't think he meant he were an official part of speech as 
in "these are the 8 parts of speech." But a word can act as an 
intensifier so the word's just descriptive--if the word is 
intensifying something in a sentence it's an intensifier. 

As Lolly Jr. says in the schoolhouse rock song about adverbs: "Hello 
folks, Lolly, Jr. here. Suppose your house needs painting -- how are 
you going to paint it? That's where the adverb comes in. We can also 
give you a special intensifier so you can paint it very neatly or 
rather sloppily."
