I think it all depends on the parents, if they make sure to show the 
kid the beauty of the books since very early age, then child will be 
reading, even if she will be surrounded by computer, tv, etc.

I remember being at the hairdresser and one of them complained that 
kids only want to play computer games these days and I just could not 
be quiet, LOL.

Um, we had been reading to my niece since she was four or five months 
old, constantly. She is almost four now and she LOVES books and it is 
just not going to go away, me thinks. Of course my brother and SIL 
are also in no hurry whatsoever to buy for her Nintendo and staff 
like that, which from what I heard gets addictive and fast, heh, but 
she watches TV (cartoons mainly of course) and still prefers books.

I think it is all up to parents, IMO.
