Carol responds:
Actually, Phoenix (and southern Arizona in general, including Tucson) is notorious for rapid temperature changes, especially in winter, and for extreme temperature differences between winter (below freezing) and summer (temperatures in the 100s and sometimes 110s Fahrenheit). I don't know what that does to brick--most houses around here are stucco though some older houses from the 1950s and 1960s are brick--but it wreaks havoc on pavement.
