Initially there was only HPforGrownups and in addition to canon discussion, off-topic discussion and movie discussion happened there, as well. As the group got busier, it was decided that those topics should be moved to their own groups. Now that the groups are so much slower lately, it's been suggested that they be recombined into the one group again. We would like to know what members think about something like this. Please come to the Feedback group and let us know how you feel: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HPfGU-Feedback The List Elves From bboyminn at yahoo.com Fri Jan 8 17:13:04 2010 From: bboyminn at yahoo.com (bboyminn) Date: Fri, 08 Jan 2010 17:13:04 -0000 Subject: Consolidating All the Groups Into One Message-ID: I've already left a post in the HPFGU-Feedback, but I think it is worth posting here to. I think, given that the post count is very low now, merging books and movies into one discussion group would be fine. I mean, books or movies, it is still all about HP. But I don't like the idea of merging the OTChatter group. This is a group of friend who have a common interest, people I trust, that I can ask anything - "Why does my computer make this funny noise?" "Anybody got a good recipe for Macaroni and Cheeze?" "How can I lose 10 pounds by Sunday?" But, even if it was allowed, I wouldn't feel comfortable posting such questions in the main group even if it were allowed. Also, by allowing OTChatter in the main group, you run the risk of turning the group in to a general discussion group. The HP aspect will get completely lost. So, I think it is worth while to merge HP books with HP movies, but valuable to keep OTChatter as a separate discussion group. [Lee]: My thoughts exactly, guys and gals. As I posted in the feedback list, there's more intimacy here. I've looked through posts I've saved and never cease to be deeply touched at how the members here rallied around those who needed uplifting because of illness, depression, surgery, other life troubles. We had members to advise as to computer problems, where to find things, ideas for Potter Parties and crafts, etc., and just a whole lot of other stuff. If we had a small population, the merging of the OT Chat with everything else would be okay. But given the size of our list base, it's better to keep OTChat and Main separate. Number One is to keep the main list open to anything related to Harry Potter & keep OTC open to anything not about Harry Potter, in case only the main list & movies list get combined. Number Two is in case, OTC does get closed as well as the movies list, then it's best to make the main list open to anyting about Harry Potter, but have the rules clearly state either on the homepage or in the list rules file that no OT posts are allowed. Any of those 2 options would be perfectly fine with me when the list elves decide on what to do with the groups. Geoff: I incline to the same view as have several other contributors, I know that many of us visit both groups; I spent many years just posting to Main but more recently have spent a lot more time on OT. It is also true that there are often Main-related posts because a thread goes OT but we want to follow it up. I know that the suggestion partly because of the low posting rate. During December, OTC went for a fortnight with only two posts - and these were weekly chat reminders - but the most noticeable was Movie which did not have a single post between 20th September and 9th December. I think that this compromise suggestion does carry a lot of weight. We used to discuss fanfiction on Main List, which originally did *not* have strict rules of on-topic. I think fanfiction should be allowed back on Main List even if the spin-off lists are not spun back in. The argument some people used to make that they did not want their impression of Rowling's creation to contaminated by impressions from fanfic until canon was closed is now obsolete. My biggest concern about combining the groups is that the Combined Group might be overwhelmed by movie discussions, in which I do not participate because I don't know anything about actors, directors, effects, and so on. Having heard that the Movie List has also become low volume somewhat alleviates my fear. My biggest desire is that posts on Main List should be allowed to be OT, because so often a thought that started from canon leads to real-world ideas (like the current thread on whether TMR is a psychopath leading to discussion on DSM-IV). That is what I wish for, regardless whether OT also continues to exist as a separate group. That is what I wish for, regardless whether OT also continues to exist as a separate group. > bboyminn: I think things that are clearly OT topics should stay on OT, but it seems fair that now that the discussion load is so low that OT tangents be allowed or policed less strictly in the Main group. As an example, I think a discussion on whether Voldemort is a psychopath that in turn leads to a discussion of exactly what constitutes a psychopath would be sufficiently related to the central theme to be allowed as long as the discussion stays within certain reasonable bounds and stays civil. I would classify that as a tangential discussion, it relates back to characters in the book though it is off on a side topic. And, it is a side topic that needs to be resolved in order to carry on the discussion of, in this case, a given character. But, I really do think it is sufficiently related that it would be a valid subject for discussion as long as the impetus for the discussion relates back to a character or situation in the books or movies. It would be up to the MODS to decide whether a topic that has strayed is still related to the books, or if it has gone completely and thoroughly off-topic. Now that there is no real need to control the post count, I think more leniency in the range of topics can be allowed. So, I guess I sort of agree with you. Though I think clear off-topic general discussion remain in the OT group. The OT group is more random discussion about virtually any topic by a group of like minded people. There are general topics like 'How do I make my computer do this or that?' that are not even remotely tangential to the HP theme, so putting them in the Main group would be a clear violation of the purpose of the group. Just my opinion. I doubt that the List Elves will shut down OTC for two reasons: It's the most active group at the moment, and it isn't really HP related most of the time, and allowing OT posts on Main would make a lie of the group name. Harry Potter for Grown-ups is just that. We go to Main to discuss Harry Potter. I for one don't want the film and book groups to merge, but I especially don't want OT and Main to merge. Do people really want me posting my fruitcake recipe on Main (perhaps pretending that it's something that the House Elves ought to serve at Christmastime) or talking about my adventures yesterday with a blown fuse that caused a loud explosion so much smoke that I had to call the fire department, pretending that it somehow relates to the havoc that Neville causes in Potions class? Let's keep the groups separate. It's logical and sensible and it works just fine as is. To me, they don't feel right in OT and when OT is more active, get swamped anyway. They probably don't belong in a group as strict as the HP main group either A separate group maybe? Carol responds: I don't think that anyone is proposing allowing fanfics themselves on OT, just allowing them as permissible topics, as they already are. A separate group for fanfic seems contrary to what the List Elves are proposing, which is consolidating the groups (or at least closing the Movie group). Brian: > But I def think movies should merge with main. Let's face it, there aren't any more books now... unless you know differently...? Carol responds: I've already given my reasons for disagreeing, especially since we have two more films coming and the Movie group will become active again when trailers and movie news, especially still shots, start popping up all over the Internet. The films are so different from the books (burning the Burrow, for example) that they're almost an alternate HP universe. Where was the Half-Blood Prince (Snape and Teen!Severus) in the so-called HBP film? They're two separate subjects, as different as the book "Oliver Twist" and the musical "Oliver!" As for more books, there's the promised encyclopedia. I also hope we'll see revised editions, with at least minor inconsistencies cleared up. Where was the Half-Blood Prince (Snape and Teen!Severus) in the so-called HBP film? They're two separate subjects, as different as the book "Oliver Twist" and the musical "Oliver!" Geoff: The following is a message I posted on Feedback, repeated here for reference. I came to the HP books via the films andso am familiar with both. There have been times in the past when I have tried to bring forward comparisons for the sake of pointing up canon and having to resort to the hackneyed phrasing"If I might be allowed to refer to 'the medium which dare not speak its name'. I agree that some of the film "modifications" are questionable. For example, what has considerably irritated me in HBP is the elevation of Ginny to a kind of Wonderwoman figure leaping to Harry's aid which on occasions makes the latter guy look a bit of a wuss as well as creating storyline distortions out of which the last two films will have to wriggle. Plus the pointless extra scenes such as the well-discussed attack on The Burrow and the episode at the railway station when Dumbledore appears to take Harry to Slughorn's. However, I would think that in a combined group, context would indicate to the well-rounded HP fan which medium was being referred to. As I have said more than once, anything which does not refer to canon of the actual films should be passed to OTC. Changing tack slightly, it has been suggested that there might be a poll of members about this. If there was such an event, we wold then have to decide whether sufficient of the membership had voted to give a clear view and whether any such poll, if it were to take place, would be mandatory or merely advisory. So, we have a number of different and conflicting paths to consider.
