Considering some of the witches and wizards are muggles, and for 11 years they have lived in the muggle world, how hard would it be for 1st years to adjust to living at Hogarts? Would Diagion Alley have fast food places, say McDonalds, for muggle kids? I would think the pure bloods would like fast food too. Or would Hogsmead have something like that, and the books or movies haven't felt the need to mention them. DIL and I was discussing the DH movie. She wanted to know when it was coming out. I told her the first half was in November and the second half was January. We were debating if both movies would come out at the same time on DVD. I said yes. She said no. Am I right on the dates they are coming out? Any speculation on the time frame of the DVDs would come out? Together of separate? Marianne Tour will make us younger, but will make our pocketbooks lighter. [Lee]: I think, like any school experience, it depends on the kid in question. As you noted, Colin and Dennis don't seem to have any problems, and I think that, at the age of 11, kids still have dreams of the impossible and can adjust faster to strange things. But, again, it really depends on the individual, and I think it would have been interesting to see some kids having a bit of difficulty adjusting and trying to cope with a new thing. But really, in my opinion, I like the whole separate atmosphere. I'm glad there weren't any "Fast food" places mentioned. The whole idea is a different experience, not to recreate the same types of things one would ordinarily find. Or would Hogsmead have something like that, >and the books or movies haven't felt the need to mention them. No.Limberger responds: Since it didn't appear difficult for Harry or Hermione to adjust to live at Hogwarts after living in the muggle world for their first 11 years, it may be that the transition isn't difficult. JRK didn't write anything about any muggle-born students having problems adjusting, aside from Tom Riddle, but he was a problem before entering Hogwarts, so Hogwarts itself was never an issue for him either. As to having muggle fast-food restaurants on Diagon Alley, I don't think this would be possible. First, the currencies used in the muggle & wizarding worlds are completely separate. This would make it very difficult for a muggle-owned company to convert wizard money into muggle money & vice versa. Also, wizards themselves don't really interact with the muggle world and may not be familiar with the types of foods served in muggle restaurants. This would put muggle-owned fast food restaurants at a disadvantage within the wizarding world IMHO. >Marianne wrote: >DIL and I was discussing the DH movie. Or would Hogsmead have something like that, and the books or movies haven't felt the need to mention them. Potioncat: I agree with the others who pointed out that no one in canon seems to have any trouble adjusting. I suppose the thrill of being able to perform magic--and how cool would that be!--outweighs any differences from the Muggle life the kids leave behind. But I always thought some WW things would be difficult to adapt to and some Muggle things would be missed. Talking mirrors / Big Macs for example. During the winter the castle seemed to be a very uncomfortable place---no central heating! But for all I know, that would be true of a Muggle castle too. So my answer is that I think some kids would find it difficult. Particularly if they didn't make wizarding friends right away. But, no, I don't think Diagon Alley would have Muggle brand fast food. They seem to have their own kinds of novelties--the different types of ice creams and cereals, for example. I think adult Muggle-borns would sally out to local communities for their childhood favorites, and the Hogwarts students who longed for a taste of home would have to wait for a holiday. > > DIL and I was discussing the DH movie. It's a little out of date - 2007 - but I don't imagine the statistics have changed drastically since then. Canada is only required to give 10 days of paid vacation time and we have an average of 10 paid public holidays per year (it will vary depending on the number of provicial holidays included with the federal holidays). I'm a part-time employee. Technically I get no paid holidays. I do, however, get 4% of my pay as vacation pay. Some companies let you accumulate this and some pay it on every paycheque. I get mine with my pay, my husband requests his at the end of every school year. So while I don't actually get paid holidays I can take time off whenever I want for vacations. I just get smaller paycheques when I do. Last year I took 4 vacations. This year it's 3. Generally just a week at a time, though, so it doesn't hurt the bank account too much. :) Sheryll From pengolodh_sc at yahoo.no Sun Jun 6 14:20:27 2010 From: pengolodh_sc at yahoo.no (pengolodh_sc) Date: Sun, 06 Jun 2010 14:20:27 -0000 Subject: A blog about experiments on Viking Age food Message-ID: I know that many members of OTChatter are interested in food in various ways - after all, getting the food discussions off the main list in the high-pressure days when we were still waiting for GoF was at least part of the motive for creating this list. Some of you are, I think, also interested in historical food, so I hope this is of interest. Lofotr Vikingmuseum has employed the Swedish archaeologist Daniel Serra to experiment with Viking Age food. He uses reproductions of Viking Age cooking equipment to cook food, inspired partly by archaeological finds, partly by Viking Age accounts of food, and partly by medieval recipes and accounts of food. The outcomes of his experiments every day also form his lunch for the day. He will be with us until some time in July, and writes about his experiments and experiences in his English-language blog: http://eldrimner.wordpress.com/ Some of the things he's been working on so far include: * cold-smoking both untreated and salted meats using just the smoke present from keeping the room's fireplace lit * cold-smoking us poor guides - this is a default extension of the previous point (the sacrifices we make for science...) * making an approximation of the thrall's meal from Rigsthula - soup based on stock from boiled meat and tough, heavy bread * regaining salt from spent brine * extracting bone marrow from sheep bones without cracking the bone (ethnological accounts from Iceland indicate a longstanding superstition that breaking a bone was considered bad luck, and a find of a lamb bone with a small hole in it, from the Viking Age, is seen as support of this) * popping malt He has worked on other things as well, and I would not be surprised if, in due course, beer brewing and mead making comes up as well. Most recently he is asking for suggestions about medieval uses of potash or lye, apart from soap, glass and tinder - if anybody has any suggestions, I'm sure he'll be very happy to get feedback: http://eldrimner.wordpress.com/2010/06/06/question/ Incidentally, Daniel has also read a number of Kit's books. No.Limberger responds: There are currently "ultimate" versions of SS and CoS available in both DVD and bluray. The "ulimate" versions can be watched with all of the deleted scenes included in the movies. Ultimate versions of PoA and GoF are coming out next. -- "Why don't you dance with me, I'm not no limberger!" I've had them for 3 years and never had one not play, never had one skip or freeze or anything, in fact, I'd say Blu-Ray is 100% better and More Stable than DVD or VHS. In fact, the coating on a blue-ray disk is nearly scratch-proof and super-slick. Easily the best media disk every created, the absolute highest degree of definition and digital sound every-offered. md -----Original Message----- [Lee]: That was an old, old message! Goodness!
