Carol responds:

I remember back in about 2001, I was trying to persuade my "boyfriend" (I hate "significant other" and there's no good term for the concept) to read "Lord of the Rings." He was telling me about the Harry Potter books, his main argument being that the books grew along with the characters and that adults could enjoy them on a different level from kids. I decided to see the film version of SS (with a child) and liked it well enough to try the book. From there, I read the rest of the available books and liked GoF so well that I couldn't wait for OoP (and, being by then a committed Potter fan, I watched all the films more or less as they came out). I also discovered HPfGU, which I joined in November 2003, several months after I read OoP--what a thrill to discover other adults seriously discussing the Potter books and, best of all, other Snape fans defending his loyalty! (I miss the discussions in those days, especially when HBP first came out!) Now there's nothing new to wait for except the last film and maybe the HP encyclopedia, but we still have the camaraderie and the bond we formed over a series of children's books!

Meanwhile, my "boyfriend" became a committed LOTR fan--books, films, and even the Silmarillion and other stuff that only true Tolkien lovers read.

Carol, hoping that our new member will just plunge in
