I didn't think it could get that cold in Arizona. Brrr! You have my empathy. And I have so had enough of this in NJ. Right now, my driveway looks like an Arctic plain and I am sore and tired of shoveling. Since Art can no longer work the snow-blower or shovel, it's all on me and there are no school kids hanging around looking for an extra buck. With another mixed-bag storm heading in on Saturday, I haven't a clue as to whether or not I'll make it to church. If I could only work that snow-melting spell of Hermione's. Geoff: Well, we've had one of the hardest winters in 25 years in the UK. Here, in the west, our lowest temperatures in December rarely sub-zero and some winters, we've only had about two overnight frosts. But in late December, we were down to -6 during the day; January was a mix of either pretty cold and clear or warm and drizzly. At the moment, Scotland and the North of England are enveloped in snow for the umpteenth time while we reached dizzy 13 - our February average usually being about 6-7. Carol, wondering whatever happened to global warming Geoff: Have you ever noticed that while your fridge is keeping your food cool, there is warm air emerging from the back? That's because of the heat exchanger. You keep your weather cool in Tucson or further north and people somewhere find warm air emerging from the back of their fridges. :-) I blame the Jetstream. We've only dropped below zero twice and for the most part we have been in the teens and twenties. That's not bad for Cincinnati; our winters are often brutally cold. We have had snow on the ground non-stop since early December, and we got hit by the ice storm a few days ago. The snow here doesn't come close to comparing with Chicago or the northeast coast. The most we have gotten is 6 inches at a time. But it has been around forever and I'm sick of it. I walk to and from work and I have a 75 lb. dog I walk six times a day. I feel pretty lucky because I have only fallen once. I consider myself a winter person. I like cold weather and tolerate it well. But although I am in no way ready for spring, I sure am ready to put this winter behind me. And there's snow in the forecast for tomorrow ... sigh. Sandy In a message dated 2/4/2011 12:20:18 P.M. I didn't think it could get that cold in Arizona. Brrr! Carol responds: It's highly unusual for Southern Arizona. It hasn't been that cold in Tucson on that date since 1899! But Northern Arizona is another matter. The altitude in Flagstaff, where I grew up, is 7,000 feet, which puts it in another climate zone altogether. Flagstaff is often the cold spot of the nation. The year I turned eighteen, we had seven feet of snow during Christmas vacation! Oddly, the day before the storm that dumped the first three feet was clear and unusually warm (high in the low sixties, which is highly unusual for Flagstaff in December), and I remember turning to my boyfriend and laughing at the weather forecaster predicting a major snowstorm. Boy, was I wrong! There was another clear, warm spell and then another four feet of snow. My brilliant sister, seventeen at the time, climbed up on the roof of the house, jumped into the middle of the yard, and had to "swim" through the snow to get back to the carport and into the house. Of course, Tucson has never had a storm remotely resembling that, but we've had an occasional white Christmas (we had one in 1986, with lovely large flakes floating down on Christmas Eve and several inches of snow on the ground and banisters Christmas morning). Easter 1999 was also sort of white, with rain turning to wet snow early in the morning, but it didn't last. This particular cold front is a dry one, but people in some Southern Arizona cities have been without heat and/or water because there wasn't enough pressure to deliver the natural gas or their pipes froze. Lots of schools canceled classes on Friday in places like Sierra Vista, Bisbee, and Douglas. It's supposed to be warmer today (high around sixty though the low this morning was 25--another hard freeze) and get cold again on Monday. Lots of people here don't even own warm coats and don't know how to deal with this kind of weather. (I do own coats--I remember other cold winters though none this cold.) Aside from the cold snap about 2 weeks ago. So cold that a customer of mine wouldn't let me bus home (he knows I have a 4 stop walk on my end) and came back to the store with his van to drive me home. We've had a couple blizzards in the past month, the last of which caused schools to cancel their buses. Other than that it was business as usual. Unlike Toronto, Ottawa doesn't shut down at the threat of snow, we just leave earlier to get to work and allow for slower public transit. The previous snowstorm had me waiting at the bus stop for ages. The bus that is supposed to run every 30 minutes showed up 25 minutes late. The bus driver nearly went right past me even though I was the only person on the sidewalk for blocks. She was annoyed that I didn't politely accept her apology ("I couldn't stop in time" - she had the entire block to see me and slow down!) and proceeded to berate me for not dressing appropriately for the weather. I was wearing boots, hat, scarf, gloves and a perfectly warm winter coat. I wasn't cold, I was becoming late for work! Not like it was rush hour, either, it was a Saturday afternoon. Have to chalk that one up to the poor standards of service (both in timeliness and attitude) of my public transit system. My bus for work probably has an on-time rating of 5%. But public transit rants are a whole other kettle of fish. :) Sheryll From HPFGU-OTChatter at yahoogroups.com Sat Feb 5 18:56:08 2011 From: HPFGU-OTChatter at yahoogroups.com (HPFGU-OTChatter at yahoogroups.com) Date: 5 Feb 2011 18:56:08 -0000 Subject: Weekly Chat, 2/6/2011, 1:00 pm Message-ID: <1296932168.11.54990.m3@yahoogroups.com> Reminder from: HPFGU-OTChatter Yahoo! In the month of December, we had 40 inches of snow, setting a new record. We have had several below 0?F day, with the lowest being in the neighborhood of -15?F to -20?F (~25?C). And by the way, the coldest place in the continental 48 states is International Falls, Minnesota. Occasionally, in a given year, one place or another might beat it, but it rapidly regains the title. Also, as long as we are on the subject of weather horror stories, I remember one particular year in Minnesota when, with the windchill, the temperature was -100?F (~-75?C), and yes most of that 'wind chill' was due to high winds from the north. I drove 100 mile to my parents house at Christmas time, and my car never warmed up. When I say 'never warmed up' I don't mean the interior of the car never warmed up, which it didn't, I mean that the temperature gauge needle never moved. I suspect if I had looked in the radiator at the end of the drive, I would have still found ice slush in it. Welcome to Minnesota. Toronto is about as far south as southern Minnesota (Mankato, to be exact). The snow usually ends in March, in April it melts, and by May the weather is usually pretty nice. Perhaps chilly in at night, but nice enough during the day. Though here is Minnesota, April and May are tornado season. That's always a worry. Generally though tornadoes don't do well near large lakes. If they hit a lake, they suck up tons of water, and that takes all the energy out of them. Too hard to keep all that heavy water spinning. So, you should be safe in Toronto. Someone has a brother who is moving to St. Paul, that is in east central Minnesota. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul (the Twin Cities) are nice places to live. Wish I was back there again, but it got too expensive. The documentary festival, iirc, runs until the 8th of May. I was thinking of going for 2-3 days, probably from May 2-4. Don't think I can swing more than 2 nights in a hotel. I'm playing it by ear for now because the festival doesn't yet have a screening schedule available. I hesitate to plan for movies if I don't know what I'm going to see! I can grab a festival pass for relatively cheap ($98) and it would allow me to see 10 screenings, but the overall expense for a 3 day vacation would be the equivalent of a 2 week paycheque for me! Five nights in Vegas last summer cost me less than 2 nights in Toronto will in May. Ah, the joys of being an underpaid (we didn't get raises last year), part-time retail employee. :) We could definitely meet up for dinner somewhere if I can manage the trip. Technically I'm only taking 3 real vacations this year - Texas in March, Las Vegas again in June with my daughter and 2 of my co-workers, and back to Colorado in October for the Sirens conference. Toronto is close enough that a 2 day trip like I'm taking this month is really just 2 days off work that I'm spending out of the city. Last summer I did it to see the HP exhibit, this time it's for a Mary Pickford exhibit. Btw, if anyone here has an interest in fantasy, I highly recommend Sirens. It's run by the same folks that did the HP conferences Witching Hour, Phoenix Rising and Terminus. This is the 3rd year for Sirens and it's still quite a small event. Focus on women and fantasy. Fabulous guest speakers, registration includes everything except 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners. The resort the event is held at is lovely, though getting there from Canada can be an adventure. The first time I took the bus - 52 hours each way. Last year I took the bus to Detroit and flew from there, an exhausting way to get there but it saved a fair chunk of cash over Air Canada's proposed airfare to Denver of $843! This year I will fly to Texas, spend the night there and then fly to Denver. It will still save me about 1/4 of the fare. If you got to the Windows Character Map (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map, you will literally see the character map for selected fonts. If you select a character with your mouse, it that character can be reproduced on the keyboard, you will see something like Alt+0211, and here is the character that combination produces "?". I'm frequently on discussion board in Europe so I frequently need non-standard characters, so I've got a small list posted next to my computer of commonly needed characters. To produce the character, hold down the ALT key, then while holding, press the number sequence on the number keypad; do NOT use the Plus sign, just ALT and the number sequence. It has to be the number keypad on the right, and not the numbers across the top. ALT+0162 = ? ALT+0163 = ? ALT+177 = ? ALT+0188 = ? ALT+0189 = ? ALT+211 = ? ALT+241 = ? ALT+250 = ? Not every letter in the font set can be reproduces in this manner, only the first 256 characters. And any character, up to that point, can be reproduced. For example - ALT+0049 = 1 ALT+0065 = A ALT+0097 = a Just passing it along. Geoff: This is the standard ASCII set, which we used to use in word processing back in pre-WYSIWYG days. Using BASIC, for example, CHR$(66) would produce upper case "B". ASCII 65-90 cover upper case A-Z, ASCII 97-122 lower case. Other codes cover numerals and punctuation. Once you got beyond 122, the codes varied according to the manufacturer's system. For example, the UK standard school computers in the late 1980s/early 1990s were BBC Acorn machines and the ASCII 120s beyond "z" controlled text colour. There are some characters that I use a lot, so I sort of know them by heart. The Pound '?' and Euro '?', for example. As I said, I've got a small list tape at my computer for a quick reminder. I can see not wanting to take the trouble for what amounts to one post per year or so, but the method is there if you should need it. Just make sure to use the Number Keypad on the Right, and to enter all four digits. For example the Pound Sign requires you to hold the ALT key down, then, on the Number Keypad, press - ZERO ONE SIX THREE 163 will not work, and the numbers across the top of the keyboard won't work. Obviously this works best if you have symbols that you frequently use. You can also pull characters from the Character Maps, which is found on all Windows computers, in a copy and paste fashion. Keep in mind that the extended characters are not standardized between fonts. The old pure ASCII character set had lines and corners for the extended characters. Some fonts have foreign characters as the extended set. So, this works best with standard and very common fonts. The '?' character should be 0177 (ALT 0177). It has to be ZERO 241 or ZERO 177. I use mostly Currency (?,?, ?), square?, cube?, degree?, and plus/minus?. The Monster Book of Monsters has all of the beasts in FB plus a number of others with what illustrations I could find or make. Additional info in the Monster Book and the info in all of the rest of the books was culled from various internet sites devoted to Harry Potter with a great deal of editing and some supplementation from a couple of books that I have on HP. The easiest were the herbs, spells and potions books. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Message-ID: Snow is Tucson is a rare event. The last time I remember was about four years ago, also in February, and then it was so slushy as to barely qualify as snow. This morning, it's only a dusting, and it's already starting to melt now that the sun is up, but at least I got some photos. On the coast, we recorded temperatures down to -6 in December and January and we've had more than our average takeaway of frost and ice.... It was the first time in 17 years of living in Somerset that I had to dig out my car.
