Carol responds:

Thanks, Lee and Tonya. The good news is that the bullet went through only the left hemisphere of her brain (back to front) so it didn't cross hemispheres. She's on a ventilator and half her skull has been removed to allow the brain room to swell, but when the doctors periodically wake her from her medically induced coma, she can respond by small gestures like raising two fingers or squeezing someone's hand. The doctors, as you've probably heard, are "cautiously optimistic." The other patients who were injured are now out of ICU. I wish the same could be said for the six who died.

I never thought that something like this could happen in my town, much less so close to home.

Carol, thanking everyone for your thoughts and prayers
