By the standards of Melbourne, this is a very historic place - it opened in 1853, only two years after the establishment of the colony of Victoria and has quite a few famous people living in it. While wandering, I came across a broken old gravestone. Most of the carving on it was worn away, but what was left was, to me at least, fascinating. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/MysteriousGravestone.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/GraveStoneDetail.jpg It just inspired odd feelings in me to look at it. For reasons, I can't explain - perhaps just to do with the imminent release of the final movie, I had all sorts of eerie feelings that were Harry Potter related... it's hard to describe, but I was thinking of the grave of Tom Riddle, the Horcruxes, the Hallows... Just odd. A few other interesting gravestones: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/GravestoneOfEdwardThompson.jpg A Police Sub-Inspector who died catching bushrangers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/GravestoneOfWalterLindrum.jpg Walter Lindrum OBE - World Billiards Champion, 1933-1950. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/GravestoneOfJamesScullin-1.jpg John Scullin, Prime Minister of Australia 1927-1929, just crammed in among everybody else (there are two other Prime Ministers buried in the cemetery along with a memorial stone to Harold Holt, the Prime Minister Australia managed to lose - it's very careless to just lose your Head of Government, but we managed it) but they are in a special section of the Cemetery. Scullin just got buried like anybody else. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/drednort/GravestoneOfPeterLalor-1.jpg Peter Lalor - Leader of Australia's Eureka Rebellion - and later Speaker of the Victorian Parliament. Certainly. As I said, the gravestone is broken, by which I mean it is lying flat on the ground as its base has been broken. Nearly all the carving is gone, and a lot of what is still there is covered by lichen, but there are a few carvings that are still visible. At the top of the gravestone is a carving of a five pointed star. Near the bottom in a row are three carvings. From left to right, the first is difficult to see, but may be a carpenters hammer or similar. The second is clearly a ladder, the third is a skull. There are the merest tracings of writing left on the stone - the only letter I could clearly make out was a single capital 'D'. The Independent United Order of Mechanics is looking a possible source for these symbols. I'm still investigating that further though. So far I can't find any evidence they ever got to Australia, but perhaps an individual member did even if the Order didn't. Or it could be an offshoot. What do you think? > > Nerona Lizzie: > I can't think of any reason why he wouldn't know. Geoff: I don't think he knew everything. His mother brought him to the orphanage as Harry saw in Dumbledpre's Pensieve: '"That's right." said Mrs. Cole, helping herself to more gin. "I remember it clear as anything, because I'd just started here myself. New Year's Eve and bitter cold, snowing, you know. Nasty night. And this girl, not much older than I was at the time, came staggering up the front steps. Well, she wasn't the first. We took her in and she had the baby within the hour. And she was dead in another hour." ..."Did she anything before she died? asked Dumbledore. "About the boy's father, for instance?"... ..."I remember, she said to me, 'I hope he looks like his papa,'... ...and then she told me he was to be Tom, for his father and Marvolo, for her father... ...and she said that the boy's surname was to be Riddle. And she died soon after that without another word. Well, we named him just as she'd said, it seemed so important to the poor girl, but no Tom nor Marvolo nor any kind of Riddle ever came looking for him, nor any family at all, so he stayed in the orphanage and hr's been here ever since."' (HBP "The Secret Riddle" from pp.249/50 UK edition) I think that shows that he knew of his parents but nothing of the circumstances surrounding his birth or the reasons for this mother ending up in the way she did. It is obvious also from other pieces of canon that he did not know of the love potion incident and held his father responsible. One, which is too long to quote here as the story of the murder of the Mr. and Mrs. Riddle Senior and their grown up son Tom at the house in Little Hangleton fifty years prior to the killing of old Frank, the caretaker, who had, at that time, been the prime suspect. (GOF "The Riddle House" pp. 7-10 UK edition) Then, there is just one other piece of evidence: '"Voldemort," said Riddle softly, "is my past, present and future, Harry Potter..." He pulled Harry's wand from his pocket and began to trace it through the air, writing three shimmering words: TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE Then, he waved the wand once and the letters of his name re-arranged themselves: I AM LORD VOLDEMORT "You see?" he whispered. "It was a name I was already using at Hogwarts, to my most intimate friends only, of course. You think I was going to use my filthy father's name for ever?... ...I, keep the name of a foul, common Muggle, who abandoned me even before I was born just because he found out his wife was a witch?"' (COS "The Heir of Slytherin" p.231 UK edition) This all suggests that he learned of his birth and the death of his mother and managed to trace his father to exact revenge in his later years at Hogwarts. When the police were investigating the Riddle murders, a "teenage boy, a stranger, dark-haired and pale" had been seen in the vicinity. The implication is that he blamed his father as he indicated to Harry in the Chamber without the knowledge that his father had been tricked. Had he found this out, maybe, just maybe, things would have changed but my feeling is that all the years without love, brooding over his origins and becoming a bully and abuser would have too deep a hold on his emotions. I don't think telling him entered Harry's mind in those moments when he was more concerned in holding Voldemort at bay rather than holding up a hand and saying "Er, just a moment, old bean, do you realise you've got it all wrong? Care to stop and sort this out over a hot chocolate?" :-) From n2fgc at arrl.net Sat Jul 23 21:18:56 2011 From: n2fgc at arrl.net (Lee Storm (God Is The Healing Force)) Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2011 17:18:56 -0400 Subject: [HPFGU-OTChatter] Other books like the Harry Potter series books? It's a different kind of magic, takes the reader to other worlds and introduces other intelligent beings who are wizards, etc. The books follow very closely on one another and you get to see the characters grow older, meet their families, experience their griefs and see them deal with real-life, everyday problems as well as other more sinister things. On my own shelves, you will also find LOTR (of course) plus the "Weirdstone of Brisingamen"/"Moon of Gomrath" duo by Alan Garner, written in the 1960s but still rattling good 'overlapping worlds' type stories set in the North of England. The story of a boy and his dragon, and the loss of one world, and the fight to save another. Really, much like JKR, these are very captiving books taking place in a vividly created world. "The Bartimaeus Trilogy" By Jonathan Stroud - A completely different take on magic than the Harry Potter world. In this world one controls magic by calling up demons and Djini (genies) and controlling them. In my view also a vividly created world with a very pleasantly annoying central character - John Mandrake, though of course that is not his really name. No wizard uses his real name for fear that some other wizard will gain control of him by knowing his true name. The "End's Game" and the "Ender's Shadow" Series by Orson Scott Card. The idea hinges on the concept that people do their best work when they are young (Einstein, Newton, Mozart,...) and by the time they pass their teens and early 20's their most creative years are behind them. Consequently, knowing of the coming invasion of the Formics, also know as the "Buggers", earth prepares for war by training very young kids with military leadership potential in the hope that when the invasion comes, they will be at their peak age and level of skill. One of the kids is Andrew "Ender" Wiggin. In the parallel series, we read the tragic story of Bean, who spends most of his life very near death. A touching story of the consummate survivor playing war games along side in friend and comrade Ender. This last series, though science fiction, is much more fiction than science. The original "Ender" short story was written in 1973. It was so popular it spawned one of the most popular science fiction novels ever written, and has since expanded into a series of 10 books total, all very captivating tales. For helping in a discussion forum regarding some aspects of the story that extended beyond the original series, the Author sent me a personally autographed copy of the latest book. And if you just want so good fun books, I highly recommend that silly yet exciting and very funny "Artiums Fowl" series of books by Eoin Colfer. That should keep you busy. OR any books that I might could check out > | and see what I like? >? I really thoroughly enjoyed "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness.? It's the first part of a trilogy, so there is more to come.? The characters are adults, rather than children, but as in Potter, the witches are hiding in plain sight in our world.? There are also demons and vampires, but before you run screaming in the other direction, let me assure you that the vampires are entirely different than any others I've encountered in the realms of fiction, and the demons are the highly creative, slightly disconnected folks of this world.? Beyond that, I don't want to say anything for fear of spoilers. Another variation on magic in our world with young protagonists is the series by Michael Scott called "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel"? It's different in feel; a pair of twins get swept into a battle between Immortals and learn to control the elemental magics as the world is swept towards a battle between good and evil.? Mythologies from all over the world get pulled into the story, which greatly adds to the entertainment in my opinion. ?? There's one more book to be published, for a total of six.? I was a bit disappointed with the last one, but am still eagerly awaiting the final episode. Moving a good deal further afield, if you want a great author with a large body of work, try Lois McMaster Bujold.? She has 2 fantasy series.? The Sharing Knife is set in an alternate North America, making it rather different than most fantasy I've read, and there is magic.? The other series is set in the Chalion universe, where magic is a part of the fabric of the world, and the gods (all 5 of them) are active participants.? They are challenging in terms best described by a quote from one of her non-magical books, paraphrased because I don't want to spend the rest of the evening rereading the book (and I will, if I open it)? - "Check your assumptions. In fact, check your assumptions at the door."? The non-magical series is about the Vorkosigan family and their world.? It gets described as space opera, and it is that, but much more as well. Yes, I love pushing books I have enjoyed! Why do you ask?? ;-) Sue [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From fenneyml at gmail.com Sun Jul 24 00:49:35 2011 From: fenneyml at gmail.com (Margaret Fenney) Date: Sat, 23 Jul 2011 20:49:35 -0400 Subject: [HPFGU-OTChatter] Re: Other books like the Harry Potter series books? I don't think they are magic exactly, but the kids are kind of magical in wonderfully unique ways. There are adorable and quirky characters and a dangerous quest. I've never read anything quite like them. There's also the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Myth and Magic collide with the modern world. Also the Percy Jackson stories by Rick Rierodan. Enjoy.
