The Thames procession of a 1000 boats and ships was great. Having lived no further than 3 miles from the river in inner London for over 40 years, watching from 170 miles away on the TV brought a host of memories back. In my own present home of Minehead in West Somerset, all the churches came together to plan a huge street party. One of the main roads was to be closed, we planned to serve 1250 free cream teas and hold a series of events in the main park. At 8.30 am, it was raining so hard that we had to make the decision to put Plan B into action. We relocated into the nearest church to our venue which has a large hall. We had gazebos in the entrance garden to serve the teas, with tables in the hall and used the church itself to present most of the entertainment. At the end of the day, we found that, because we were then on the main shopping street, we actually served over 1500 teas and calculated that 2000 people visited us! So what we thought was going to prove a dismal washout went the other way. Our prayers for the day were answered but not as we expected and in the event, we thought that we had far more opportunities to chat to passers-by than in our original location.
