From dumbledore11214 at yahoo.com Tue Jan 1 23:34:45 2013 From: dumbledore11214 at yahoo.com (dumbledore11214) Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2013 23:34:45 -0000 Subject: Casual Vacancy Message-ID: So I finally read the Other Book :-). Here is the review I left. Maybe those who read it may share thoughts? I loved Harry Potter books, I really did, but the last thing I expected from this book is to be anything like Harry Potter. I expected the book for adults which has nothing to do with magic and everything to do with reality of our existance. I expected something along the line of Dikkens, along the line of my beloved Russian classics of 19 century. Based on the reviews I expected something maybe not as well written, but with similar subject matter like Dostoevsky. I am writing all of this to stress that the reason I disliked this book so much has nothing to do with me expecting something fun, light and entertaining. I did not. I also want to stress that it is all me, it is not the book's fault. Yes, the people in this book have to deal with terrible things. You name it it is there - abuse, poverty, drug use, more abuse, just plain out marriages that not working. It is all there, so in that sense it reminded me of Dostoevsky a little. Do you know what's different? I hated them all. It is so true that the person that had something worthy in him as a person leaves the book within first few pages. I did not expect the perfect people in this book, heck I would have been fine with wrecks of human existance, grey, almost dark characters. But I did not feel that one of them has a spark, something redeemable in him? Gogol, Dickens, Dostoevsky wrote a lot about horrible, miserable people, but they managed to make me feel for their characters, made me pity them. Those humans? I would not mind if they all would drop dead now. I pretty much could not stand most of them. For some reason when I read this book, I was also thinking of american TV show The Wire. Those who watched it may confirm that this show dealt with some of the darkest horrors of human nature and looked at those horrors very unflinchingly. But guess what? The worst criminal sometimes showed that they still had a little tiny something in them to remind us that they are humans. Not so much in this book as far as I am concerned. I deeply respect that this is the book JKR wanted to write and I think for what she wanted to convey, she wrote it remarkably well (thus three stars and not one out of respect for writing), but boy I despised her subjects and if this is the story she would continue telling in her next books, I do not care to continue reading them. Sherry now: I had a hard time snipping this one, because I agreed with everything Alla said. I got the book the day it came out. I did not expect a light magical story either. Though by book four HP wasn't light anymore. I was confident that though the story would be different, JKR could still enchant and entrance with her use of words, humor and character development. I made myself finish the book, hoping to find something to care about or like in someone, but I came away dissatisfied. I did not like any character at all, except the one who died at the beginning of the book! They were boring and dislikable to the point that I wouldn't have cared if an earthquake swallowed them all, beyond a superficial, too bad sort of feeling. Rowling has such a knack for creating multi-dimensional complex characters, and this more than anything else was what I found so disappointing in the Casual Vacancy. In HP, she gave us characters like Harry, Snape, Dumbledore, the marauders, people who were not cookie-cutter good or bad. Even characters I disliked to the end, such as Snape, had depth and reasons I couldn't understand. I was horrified at the way he died. But the CV characters left me with no feeling about them except that I despised them, one and all. And if somehow, Nagini had come along and eaten one of them, I'd have probably told her, good girl. I'll certainly give the next book she writes a try, but if this is how all her adult books will be, I'm even more thankful for the wonder of Harry Potter, in spite of some of the outcomes I wished would have been different. In my humble opinion, if a book doesn't have at least one redeeming character or someone you want to feel encouraging thoughts about, the book doesn't get read by me. Writers have fallen into writing such dysfunctional people; it's beyond my ability to understand. I was really excited when CV came out, got the book at the library as soon as it did. And I was so disappointed. I read about 50 pages and turned it back in. Glad to know that it didn't get any better - I don't feel cheated! Since she changed publishers in the middle of HP and CV, I have wondered if she wasn't pushed into adding all the "adult" scenes in the book - you know, some agent pushing her to add those scenes to "prove" she had it in her. Sort of like child stars think they aren't taken seriously until they do the movie with nude scenes. Anyway, thanks to all who posted. Remember before this book came out she said something along the lines that Harry Potter freed her to tell the story she wants to tell and that she knows many of her fans won't like this one and that's ok? I am of a very firm opinion that the writer has to tell the story her muse inspires her to tell, but boy am I am sad that this is the story she wants to share. That is what I found sadly lacking in this book.
