Survivor, now in it's second season, is a reality television show.</blockquote>

<p>And a big reason I don't tend to watch these, in any incarnation (besides
the fact that generally I don't have time, given the kids'n'all), is that
I think it insults my intelligence to call it "reality TV." Honestly. Reality
has absolutely nothing to do with what goes on on these things. I have
this mental image of the camera and production people, sitting back under
their beach umbrellas and drinking condensation-beaded cokes out of coolers,
while they're filming these "survivors" under these "dangerous" conditions.
Not to mention all that spontaneous, unscripted, undirected interaction
that just happens to have good camera angles and audible dialogue. Yeah,
right.
<p>"Reality TV" is a blend of the talk-show genre, where "real people"
air their grievances and dirty laundry, and soap operas. Neither of which
I care for, either. It's just that adding the label "reality" to something
so patently synthetic is the last straw.
