We began a study on the fantasy genre in October. I divided the class
into three groups. One group read James and the Giant Peach, one read The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the other group read Harry Potter
(1st book). Twice a week we met in our groups and discussed the books,
the rest of the week doing different activities relating to the fantasy
genre. The students even wrote thier own fantasy story. I sent a note
home to the parents when we began the study. I encouraged them to read
the books and discuss the stories with their kids. I did not recieve
any negative feedback and any of the books.
Now that we have finished the study, many of the students that were
in other groups are reading Harry Potter on thier own. Every one loves
Harry! I have read book one and two.
Good luck in 5th grade - you'll love 'em!
