I thought the portrayal of Snape in the first book was by far the best,
because he was a "prime suspect" most of the time. Then we find out
that he was a good guy with a rotten personality, and he even took some
measures to safeguard Harry.

One minor disappointment for me in the second and third books is that
Snape is 100% petty and mean without the counterbalancing good traits
that we found out about in the first book. At least we find out why he
dislikes Harry so much, but boy, talk about holding a grudge <g>.
