I'm really sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been out of commission for a few days. Regarding your question, I guess I never considered Harry Potter books to be just for children, or maybe, I've got a child-like (I hope not "childish") mind--to me, they're like the Star Wars series or the Lord of the Ring books - something for all ages. Anyway, your question started me thinking - why do the Potter books appeal to people of all ages? I hope you all will jump in here and tell us all why you like Harry Potter. I think I like the series because I've always been a fan of "fairness", and I love it when the "meek and the small" triumph over big, bad bullys. Also, I love the fun stuff. Finally, I think the actual writing is great - literate and imaginative. But way too much about what I think - how about you? Does anyone have any info on the possibililty of making the first book into a movie? Rowling on one of the news magazine shows (60 Minutes or Dateline, one of those). There was mention that the rights to the first book had been sold to a movie maker. I was also heartened to see that Ms. Rowling is not selling the rights to Harry Potter toys, action figures, candy, etc. willy-nilly. Some encouraging signs (all from Time Magazine); 1. Movie rights were bought by WB. ANYONE is better than Disney ! 2. Harry and Hogwarts will be British in the movies. If they had Americanized him, I would've boycotted Time Warner. 3. Live action, and "most of the budget will go on getting the spl. effects right." (Can't you just see Dumbledore and Peeves as Disney cartoon characters a la Cinderella!) But that means WE'LL have to cast the live action movie. Who should play what? I see "Moony" as a young, tired Richard Burton or Anthony Hopkins. And altho I must admit I see Hagrid as a cartoon character, I suppose the actor who plays Indy's beefy friend (John Rys something) could do in a pinch. More important - what do you think? If you want to discuss a plot development or ending, etc., please remember to use the "spoiler device" (i.e., type "spoiler" then at least 10 blank lines so that the innocent reader cannot see any message that might give anything away. I have just gotten my first two Harry Potter books, about seven hours ago and I can put "Sorcerer's Stone" just long enough to check my email! I found out about the books through a Newsweek article, and being a big Roald Dahl and Diana Wynne Jones fan thought this would be just for me! I don't regret ordering the books, even though it took quite a few weeks for them to arrive to my home in Peru. It's also a treat to find out that there are other adults who enjoy children's books (that are witty and well written). I see Jeremy Irons filling any number of roles brilliantly. How about Snape? Or a cameo as Malfoy's father? Or save him for the third book as Sirius Black? The actress who won an Oscar as Daniel Day Lewis's mother in "My Left Foot" as McGonagall? So many roles, so many good actors. Maybe I can sneak in as Sir Cadogan in the third installment. Brian
