I've been thinking about the Beckhorn affair. I fell about as hard as
anyone for the first posting and, well, it wasn't clear to me until that,
"I've changed my mind... Harry does have redeeming virtues" posting that
something wasn't quite right here.

OK. It was a joke but I think it raises a serious issue that we ought
to give some thought to how we're going to deal with it.

The folks who want to ban Harry Potter are out there. Mr. Beckhorn
did quite a reasonable impersonation of them. It isn't going to be the
Muggles that do battle with them; it'll be us. (Actually I don't think
Harry is in any serious danger unless the remaining books become MUCH
darker than they are - There are too many copies out there. But what
about the next set of books we love that some Mr. Beckhorn wants banned?)

Do we reason with them? Do we build solid Biblical cases against them? Do
we build solid literary cases against them? (You should see the attack
I started preparing on Mr. Popper's Penguins when I thought Beckhorn
liked it.) Surely, ignoring them is not the best solution.

And by the way, I vote with everyone else, Voicelady. Stay in the club.
