I met a lady at the science fair last night who was in the middle ground
in the Harry Potter debate. She didn't like Harry Potter very much
but she wasn't one of those who hates the books and wants to see them
banned. She thought the books were fine for kids and she was glad her
children had read them. She had read the first one but had no interest in
reading any of the others. As such, she's the first of her type I've run
into. Everyone else I know either adores Harry, hasn't read any of them,
or hates Harry with a deep abiding passion.
Her problem? "Too much witchcraft." It made her uncomfortable. When I
tried to pursue why that was the case I got one of those "It just does"
answers. I'm not sure how to deal with that other than to say "Hmm"
and move on.
